I've always wondered why they don't anymore.
Polarization and nationalization of congressional elections under Obama which hasn't receded made it much harder for Democrats to do so.

Famed retail politics from those Democrats who figured out how to win.

This plus the lasting remnants of prairie populism. (and reliably Native American areas pushed Dems over the line too) It seems like wheat-growing areas have been especially strong for Democrats comparing to ranching areas. It's a volatile business where government intervention has been important in the past.
