ballotpedia on it
Quote
Nonprofit groups are organizations that do not distribute surplus revenues as profits or dividends to shareholders. Instead, nonprofits use revenues for self-preservation or expansion. Tax-exempt nonprofits are regulated under Section 501 of the Internal Revenue Code. States may subject nonprofits to additional regulations beyond those imposed by the federal government.[1][2]
Under federal law, nonprofits are generally only required to disclose to the public information about donors who contribute to fund campaign expenditures. State laws, however, may require more disclosure. Some say expanded donor disclosure provisions minimize the potential for fraud and establish public accountability. Meanwhile, others say that disclosing information about donors violates privacy rights and can inhibit charitable activity.[3][4]

This article outlines proposed laws governing donor disclosure policy in California. This article also provides background information on the key terms and concepts associated with this policy area.

I think it’s justifiable if they are significantly political in nature.

Yes, and they should be required to do the same with employee compensation.

They already are.  Non-profits have to file Form 990 each year, and even better, they have to be available to the public to examine.  If they fail to file them, they automatically lose their non-profit status.

I realize that. Unfortunately, I've worked with a lot of people in non-profit administration who heavily resent those requirements, and they're rarely people with whom I'm in any position to disagree.

If they really want resentment, just think if non-profits were treated like S corps, with any profits (retained donations) being treated as income to the controlling officers (owners).

There's no such thing as a non-profit organization.
