Easily California. I could see myself living in some parts of Texas (although I'd certainly feel safer if they winterized their energy infrastructures). Florida is a cultural cesspool and New York is way too cold.

1. New York (only because it has NYC and Buffalo, otherwise it would probably be my last choice as the state outside of those 2 cities is essentially one big dump with high taxes to top that off)

2. Florida (has the highest concentration of French expats in the US after NY, it may arguably have even more than NY; virtually all the French people I've known who've lived/live in the US were/are in Florida; so Florida is my second choice just for that)

3. Texas (probably the most balanced state)

4. California (too expensive for what you're getting imo, and also I'm not a big fan of West Coast culture, but would definitely have the best climate out of the bunch)

1/2: New York and Cali. Mountains are dope, and adopting an East Coast accent would be awesome.

3. Texas

4. Florida

Buffalo is a dump.

Source: Lived in Niagara County (which is far nicer than Buffalo)

New York would be #1 for me, but for the Adirondacks and not Western NY.

New York is both too wintry and too expensive for my tastes.

California is too expensive and farther away than I'd care to go.

Texas has the most choice in weather conditions, but more distant than Florida.

I'd rather stay here in South Carolina than move back to Florida. (I wasn't even 5 when we moved north to South Carolina.)

Frankly, I'm hard pressed to think of a better place to live than the Carolinas, tho that could be because I'm accustomed to the area. It has both mountains (albeit low ones) and a coastline, plus the cost of living is relatively low.

I'll go with the one I actually live in.

Florida is culturally derelict and bereft of nature, California – although they have the superior climate – is too expensive for renters even away from coastal areas, and New York is been there done that for me (harsh winters and too heavy a tax burden).

Texas has both the coast and *actual* mountains, which is pretty unusual for the South, as well as a number of cities of international significance, which are each culturally interesting and unique in their own ways. Houston is the international juggernaut of energy, Dallas is the sprawling multi-cultural metroplex, Austin is the big tech urban hub and university town, etc.

California sucks. If you're thinking about moving here, please reconsider. Trust me, wherever you live right now is better. Just stay there and you'll be happy not knowing what it's like here.

Florida also has the worst long term future climate wise for such obvious reasons. That state is likely have significant sea level rise within the next century.

When it comes to North American cities, I'd only choose to live in DC or NYC.  So NY is my answer.

Any other place, I'd imagine I'd get bored very quickly.

That's your list? Really? Like, knowing what you like, I'm sure you'd prefer California's Central Coast to Key West (but it has much better towns than SLO) and the Hudson Valley is much more charming than Albany. Come to think of it, California is the best-fit state in the country for you but actually--climate, landscape, food, Catholicism--it's all here.

Central Coast and the Capital Region are excellent choices. Key West is strange, but Florida sucks anyway.

Key West is the only place in the list I have been to, and I loved it enough to compensate a lot of things.

1. Southern Orange County/northern San Diego County
2. California Central Coast (Carpinteria through Big Sur)
3. California North Coast (coastal Marin County and north)
4. California Canyon Country (Santa Clarita, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks)
5. Outlying SF Bay Area (Pleasanton, Walnut Creek, coast from Halfmoon Bay to Carmel-by-the-Sea)
6. Upstate New York
7. Texas between San Antonio and Austin

1. Key West
2. San Luis Obispo
3. Albany/Schenectady/Saratoga Springs
4. Who care

Living in SoCal, I found the quality of Catholicism there extremely lacking, at least in the Valley and west LA County. Not because it was too liberal, but because it had little substance or community.

1. A cabin in the Adirondacks, which I dearly miss, immersing myself in nature rituals
2. A weirdo quasi-Victorian house in Eureka, immersing myself in Mr. Bungle lore
3. Downtown Austin, immersing myself in the anthropology of fake-artsy white liberal gentrifiers
4. A college town in Florida, immersing myself in the encroaching waters of the Atlantic and the Gulf

1. New York (but not NYC proper - probably an outer burb or somewhere in Upstate)
2. Texas (probably Austin or Dallas)
3. California (not a California fan but better than the alternative)
4. Florida

Gonna buck the Atlas trend of being obsessed with a state's culture and say EASILY Florida.
