Let's just say because of their questionable mental health, either Trump or Biden is admitted into a Mental Hospital a week before the election for literally losing their minds.

Discuss with maps.

no impact, Trump was actually sent to a hospital in early October. he was also mysteriously sent to the hospital in the middle of the night a while earlier as well.

If Trump were sent to a mental hospital, it would have no impact. If Biden were, it would have a massive impact. This is due to asymmetric polarization.

Biden's mental health isn't at all questionable.  Trump is a sociopath, Biden is just old.

This is the correct answer.

This question is extremely silly.

No way either Trump or Biden would admitted to any institution.

If one of them had a mental breakdown, they will be sent home (Delaware or Mar-A-Largo) and be looked at private doctors sworn to secrecy.

We still don't know why Trump went to the hospital in the middle of the night last year. Maybe it went nothing maybe it was serious. Medical privacy is still lock and key, because doctors can lose their licensures and well paying careers for leaking information.

Of course, the week before the election means the most media attention. A President withdrawing from the campaign trail would cause a lot of speculation

Assuming its the breakdown is long lasting …

1. If its Trump, the media will first assume that he is giving up considering the polls. Or complications from his COVID diagnosis. Trump's team is notoriously incompetent with leaks. Pence is seen as acting President until Nov 3, afterwards the cabinet makes it official. Probably flips NC along with senate races in NC and ME. Long term I can see Don Jr or DeSantis or even Pence calling Trump a martyr and that the Democrats made him sick from working so hard for the American people.

2. If its Biden, all hell breaks lose. Even if its kept secret, Biden disappearing from the campaign trail will raise alarm bells. Democrats will go crazy and assume something horrible happened. Expect Obama and Harris to hit the campaign trail like crazy to do damage control. Trump wins his 2016 map and NV. Republicans win back the house. Long term (assuming free elections still happen), the Democrats never nominate someone under 55 again.
