I enjoy the scientific research that the image launched, it actually helped asked questions of vision researchers they hadn't considered. They've engaged large group surveys and found there are measurable differences in response based on age, gender, and even how late one wakes up.
The illusion of gold and white stems from assuming that the bright sunlight of the background is the only source and the dress is in shadow, rather than back lit by warmer (ie more yellow) light from the store. Most observers of illusions can learn to see it both ways, but this one tends to remain fixed with the observer. That also makes it especially interesting for research. Score one for social media-driven science.
Good to hear that the cause of science was advanced.
