With all the reports and common sense pointing towards Trump making a comeback in 2024, easily winning the GOP nomination if he does. But in a world post 1/6, will the general electorate remember in 2024? Will Trump be in worse mental and physical shape? Even if he gets Harris, would he win with his baggage?

Discuss.

Sadly, no. We thought he would be too toxic in 2016, and in 2020 he was only just barely toxic enough to lose. While he is definitely more toxic than other time, since we have an idea of how satisfying it is having a non-toxic President again, at least 45% of this country is beyond reach and will excuse anything he does in spite of that. I also don't think the insurrection he incited will have as much relevance or be as fresh in peoples' memories as it should by 2024. What can he even do that's worse now? He threatened the very lives of the people who acquitted him! I shudder to think about it because he (and his party too) will always find ways to sink lower.

Republicans are falling into the same trap that Democrats did in 2016, which is believing that because they didn't lose by much the last time, they can double down on the same strategy next time. Obviously, while it was close, this did work for Democrats in 2020, but I don't think Trump will have the advantage of his incumbent opponent being rocked by such instability and unpopularity as his administration was.

Trump might be indicted for tax fraud. I thought Biden doesn't have the baggage of Hillary Clinton.

The issue Trump has is that he’s never gotten above 45% of the independent vote. Even when he won in 2016, it was because Democratic-leaning independents stayed home and Clinton only took ~40% of the independent vote. Biden has consistently held a 50+% approval rating among independents, won ~50-55% of independents in November, and only stands to solidify his support if everything goes well with the stimulus plan+vaccine rollout.

Remember, Biden got the highest share of the popular vote for the challenger to an incumbent president since FDR in 32. If there was any takeaway, that’s a mandate against Trump.

Not at all.

Trump would be a legitimate candidate for president, and if he wins again there's a possibility he becomes a dictator.  I'm not being dramatic or doomy, just stating the truth--the possibility exists.

There is no such thing as "too toxic" in America.
