Since the Presidential primary was opened up in 1972, I believe these are the only states where no recognized person has run for the Presidential nomination of either the Democratic or Republican Party:

1.Oregon
2.Wyoming

In 2020, I believe state senator Richard Ojeda was the first Presidential primary candidate from West Virginia (U.S Senator Jay Rockefeller nearly ran in 1992) and I believe Doug Burgum is the first person to run for President from North Dakota from this cycle. Steve Bullock was the first from Montana to run in 2020.

U.S Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon was a late entrant in the 1960 Democratic Presidential race, but that was under the old rules.

Jack Fellure beat him to it in 1988 if he counts as a recognized person.

I missed Rhode Island, Nebraska, Idaho, and Wisconsin bad.

Burgum is brand new, so I guess he counts.

Muskie ran in 1972.  I thought we were talking about after 1972.

Finch I missed, although he flopped and was a write-in buhe did get write-in votes.  Laxalt started a committee but was gone long before the first primary. Everson barely qualifies as a recognized person as he never made a debate stage and dropped out long before the 1st primary.

Robert Byrd ran in 1976 in just WV as a favorite son and won all delegates.

I meant including 1972 since that's when the primary was opened up. My wording could have been better, my bad.
