why did reagan do worse than his national average in tennessee?

Coincidentally, in the same year Reagan underperformed in TN, Al Gore was elected to the United States Senate, although I doubt he helped Mondale at all.

it is too bad that then governor lamar alexander didnt run for that senate seat in 84.  he would have likely beaten gore...and spared us all a lot of annoyance.
