I've read numerous sources and books that all say McGovern's platform was too far left and thats why he lost in a landslide

But what was his platform? No matter how much I google it, I can not find anything. What was so radical about it?

Among his proposals was a "demogrant", or yearly $1,000 UBI, to replace the personal income tax exemption. It didn't fly well after the expansion of anti-welfare sentiment created by the controversy around Nixon's Family Assistance Plan program, and was later dropped from the platform, but it didn't shake McGovern's association with what most saw as a highly naïve and idealistic form of progressivism.

- withdraw from Vietnam
- pardon the draft-dodgers
- continue détente
- appoint liberal justices to the SCOTUS

That’s it, as far as I know.

McGovern denied that he thought there should be any role for the federal government when it came to abortion, but he was perceived as pro-choice for some reason. He was also wrongly thought to be for looser drug laws.

Among other liberal policies: a guaranteed minimum income of $1,000/yr., a ~30% cut to the defense budget, immediate withdrawal from Vietnam in exchange for the release of American POWs, amnesty for draft dodgers (but not deserters), & federally decriminalizing marijuana. Believe it or not, though, he did wanna leave abortion to the states.

Legalizing marijuana would be a disaster politically in the height of anti drug sentiment.
