I'm going with Elizabeth II & I freely admit that that's because my entire life has occurred during her reign.

Elizabeth II. As has already been said, she's been around for a long time. She's a stable figure in an otherwise unstable world. Her death will be a profound change on the world.

I'll give the nod to Victoria.

Her life story is very compelling.

Amazing how a short time can change things, but the thing that puzzles me is that I presumed that was already known or at least expected, assuming you are referring to the recent allegations about racism in the royal family and not something else that I missed.

I mean, maybe re: Philip, but I don't think anybody ever thought it went as far as Elizabeth herself. (And yes, I'm indeed referring to said allegations.)

It's funny because Elizabeth's political beliefs, to the extent that she's allowed to have any, are generally thought to be non- or anti-racist (strong commitment to the Commonwealth, etc.). But of course there are tons of personally racist people with non-racist public commitments, and vice versa.

I voted for Victoria because I like the aesthetics of the late nineteenth century.

Mary I, who was no bloodier than her father or her siblings. If she'd been able to conceive an heir, England would likely have resumed being a Catholic country, tho it would have likely required a different husband than her second cousin once removed, both for there to be a kid and for England to not be embroiled in anti-Castilian patriotism against foreign rule. Phillip II was for many reasons the wrong husband for Mary to have wed.

That first sentence isn't true. Less than 200 Catholic martyrs were executed in Elizabeth's 45-year reign, and none were executed in her first 12 years, while almost 300 Protestant martyrs were burned in Mary's 5 years on the throne. Edward VI killed much less than both of them in his 6 years, while Henry VIII seems to have made less martyrs than his daughters but considerably more than his son.

Compared to Protestants, Catholics proved likelier to seek exile rather than seek martyrdom, so absolute numbers aren't a good measure of relative bloodiness.

She is a 20s child who grew up around aging Victorians, so with that frame of reference it comes as less of a surprise to me.

Medieval History gets so overlooked relative to what came afterwards.

Or to what came before. That literally is what is means to be Medieval, to be in between two other eras people care about.

And that is itself the product of a certain amount bai's based on where the renaissance started.
