Ted Cruz has got to have some of the worst instincts in American politics. Not to mention he didn't even try to disguise himself. He even wore the same mask as he always does.

Voters don't have a long memory. So no.

If the vacation had been booked weeks before, I don't see a problem with this.

Me neither. If anything, not cancelling is among the more...average voter-like things Cruz has done.

Ummm... we're still in a pandemic. Most of us haven't been able to travel for pleasure since 2019. Maybe the average voter in Texas also flagrantly disregards the guidance of only essential travel abroad, but I'd still be pretty mad to see either of my Senators vacationing in Vancouver, let alone Cancun, let alone during a major crisis in my state.

You don't think he should've cancelled given that there's a crisis in his state (let alone a pandemic)?

Well, I wouldn't blame Cruz for wanting to have a short vacation to a neighboring country for some family time. It's really not germane to an assessment of how well he's doing his job either. He's a terrible senator but this is not really where the beef is, so to speak.
It might be different if he were Governor.

If there was something that he could usefully do of some importance, yes. If only for show, no.

Aren’t Senators supposed to be...helping their constituents during a massive crisis?

I find it hard to buy the idea Cruz being absent from Washington DC for how many single digit number of days (during a crisis that has run for over a year by now) is somehow harming the people of Texas. His personal presence not being there for 3 days doesn't stop employees of his from fielding requests and handling matters as well as can be done in his absence. If he had a month-long vacation in Cancun, that'd be a different matter, but this trip is being blown out of proportion I think.

Half of politics are about optics. Cruz knows that, hence all the stupid tweets he always sends about liberals and California. This is obviously a bad move and he should have canceled if it was booked already.

Do as I say, not as I do!

“I was speaking this weekend with the meteorologist expert who was saying the combination of these two storms, we could see up to 100 people lose their lives this week in Texas. So don’t risk it. Keep your family safe and just stay home and hug your kids,” Cruz said on the “Joe Pags Show” on Feb. 15.

Cozumel would have been a better choice if you're going to be an asshole and leave TX.
