Seeing as most of the South trended GOP in 1988, the answer should be pretty obvious

Al Gore wins in 1988 IF he plays his cards correctly. Nobody wins in 1984.

Mondale had that connection with Carter (was on the same ticket twice with him), which might have helped a little??

Dukakis was a bad fit for the South and maybe it was a bad strategy to have a texan running mate in order to try to be competitive in the south. Dukakis had a narrow defeat in some states in the north and in the west in which the democrats won all the presidential elections after that. Maybe it would be better to Dukakis to focus on those states.

I remember from watching 1984 news coverage how disappointed Democrats were about the performance in the South and then four years it got even worse for them. This was in spite of a very successful midterm in the South in 1986.

They were both utterly awful but I’d argue Dukakis was even worse since his shyt performance was with a popular Texan on the ticket with him. I’m stunned the Democrats didn’t nominate a southerner in 1988 that was a very, very winnable year imo
