Quote
MIAMI — Ron DeSantis once drew national scorn for his stewardship of Florida’s Covid-19 response — critics took to referring to the governor as “DeathSantis” for his resistance to restrictive measures.

But that very blowback — marked by predictions of doom and widespread criticism for being divorced from science — has made DeSantis ascendant in the GOP. His position is strengthened among the GOP grassroots and elites heading into his 2022 reelection in Florida and accompanied by increasing conservative chatter nationwide about a presidential bid.

By scrapping with reporters and President Joe Biden’s White House — which has singled out Florida and the governor in recent weeks — the wonky but combative governor has elevated his profile at a time when other big-state governors have been laid low.

He’s just what the GOP establishment and base both want. He’s Trump but he doesn’t tweet all the time.

Sarah Palin never ran for president and Hillary Clinton was the nominee, so I’m unsure what your singular example of Chris Christie is supposed to prove lol

Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush, Bob Dole, George W Bush, Mitt Romney, Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondale, Al Gore, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden were all “hyped” 3+ years out from being nominated.  Early standing isn’t entirely predictive, but to pretend it’s irrelevant is also wrong.

Yep, sounds like the very thing the GOP would find appealing. Maybe he will be the nominee. He's despicable enough.

However, if he runs against a President Biden who gets credit for ending the pandemic I don't think his coronavirus response as Governor will be received as warmly as the always out-of-touch GOP base may think it is.

Anyone who finds his COVID response to be absolutely horrid voted HRC in 2016, Biden in 2020, and will vote for anyone the Democrats put up in 2024.

The more deaths you're responsible for, the more popular you are with the current Republican Party.

So the stupider you are, the bigger a GOP star you can be? Makes perfect sense.

Unless those "deaths" are fetuses supposedly.

He does poorly among AA, that's why he is Vulnerable to a Charlie Crist challenge, he would lose the Midwest to Biden with only IL as the only Latino state.

That's why he did poorly with Gillian.  If he survives a Charlie Crist challenge in 2022, which he wont

So Andrew Cuomo is now more popular with Republicans than Ron DeSantis?

DeSantis would at least be better qualified than Trump ever was (even when Trump was president for 4 years).

Not saying he'd be good, but unfortunately the bar is set so low.

I also want to point out Politico calling him a "wonky but combative governor". While it's not the same, it's a similar energy to "austere religious scholar".

I knew this would be a politico article before even opening the thread. There are obviously FAR more harmful political outlets in the discourse today, but few as pointless and masturbatory.

Florida had one of the best COVID responses in the country.

FL is 29th in per capita cases (8701 per 100,000). For as much vitriol as this state gets here and elsewhere on the interwebs, it's a bit overblown.

Wanting freedom is not the trait of a sociopath.  Supporting a tyrannical nanny state government is.
