Completely different situation, but I wonder how early 2016 Dem primary polls would have looked if Romney won in 2012. Similar percentage for Obama (as Trump in this poll)? Or would the base have deemed him unelectable and looked to Clinton instead?

Many Republicans don’t believe the Capitol Hill rioters were actually Trump supporters.  Only 43% of Republicans think the people breaking into the Capitol were Trump supporters:

Do you believe the people who broke into the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., as Congress was certifying Electoral College votes for President-elect Joe Biden are:

Among Democrats, the answers were:
Trump supporters 84%
Trump opponents 7%
not sure 8%

Among Republicans, the answers were:
Trump supporters 43%
Trump opponents 29%
not sure 27%

Even though he's quieter than ever before, polarisation is restoring Trump's #s within the base from their dip in January.

No Republicans have been able to make any respectable brand for themselves over the last four years, and everyone (like Cruz) that ran against Trump the first time destroyed their credibility. We need to wait a couple years before it's clear who the front runners are. Those first two years of a term are when people try to make a name for themselves.
