Presidency of James Carter, 1977-1978

On September 11, 1978, Three jets crashed into the Octagon, the Capitol Building, and America Tower (the 2,100-foot tall building in NYC, tallest in the world). Thousands died, including President Carter and Speaker Chisholm. The Vice President was missing for two weeks.

Presidency of John Scott, 1978

Senate President Pro Tempore Scott was President for two weeks. During those two weeks, he authorized several successful raids in Iran to retrieve the terrorists (some of whom got a special exemption from the Death Penalty Repeal Act of 1955). The finding of the VP ended his Presidency.

Presidency of George McGovern, 1978-1981

Not much except capturing of more terrorists. McGovern didn't run for re-election. The popular Secretary of State Martin Luther King, Jr. won instead.

Presidency of Martin Luther King Jr, 1981-1985

It was during this time that ground was broken on the new America Tower in New York, which at 2,500 feet tall would be by far the tallest building in the world. The capital building was also repaired. Because the plane hit the center (dome), a minimal number of legislators were killed, but the damage was substantial. The government took this time to expand the building outward by 10 feet on each side, along with installing an underground parking garage and visitor center. The dome was completed in all its glory.

America also landed on Venus, although because of the heat the astronaut could only stay for three minutes. King didn't run for re-election.

At 77, John Scott was the oldest president ever inaugurated. No major events happened. Because Scott and his VP were old, they both declined re-election. The Democrats picked Al Gore, a reasonable center-right Governor from Tennessee. Gore's social center-right leanings and fiscal center-left/left leanings were popular with Black voters (along with his VP pick, Senator Morgan Freeman), which enabled him to win plurality-black South Carolina and Louisiana.

Presidency of Al Gore, 1989-1993

Al Gore is most famous for his American Farm Security Act, which increased subsidies for farmers to rotate crops to keep soil quality high. This dramatically lowered the cost of produce below the already low amounts. Gore also presided over the full socialization of medicine (emergency care and major procedures had been free for nearly a century, while preventative care had been free for over 70 years), with all doctor's visits and medication covered by the government. Gore also fully eradicated homelessness (which was only in the low four digits nationwide, so mostly a ceremonial change) and reduced poverty by 50%... From 0.2% to 0.1%.

He won re-election handily and the Dems took control of the Senate for the first time in over 132 years.

Biden cited age (78) and declined re-election, letting Democratic nominee Susan Rice narrowly win over former Vice President Barack Obama.
