There is one candidate on this list who would have offered true populism to counter Trump's fake populism. Given how close the election actually turned out to be, that could have made all the difference in the decisive states.

Well, Biden ended up beating Trump in real life, so I see no reason why he wouldn't have done so in this alternate 2016.

Yeah, that guy would have won. He would have relegated Trump to the same dustbin of history as John McCain and Mitt Romney currently occupy.

Four less years of a Trump presidency.

Biden would have held PA, MI, and WI in 2016.  He may have even won FL that year.

Maaybe Biden, but I'm increasingly skeptical that anyone who themselves didn't have a history of baggage deflected and opponents careers ruined would be able to take on Trump...and only Hillary had that kind of history.

Biden definitely would've, Bernie might have, it would all depend on who the media would've attacked more between Trump and Bernie and if the rank and file of the Democratic party would sabotage him behind the scenes, sort of like they did with McGovern in 72. I don't think enough of your average Democratic voters would've stayed home or backed Trump in the event that Bernie were nominated. There were many Democratic Senators and even some Governors with Presidential ambitions that could've beaten Trump to, but I can't say literally anyone else would've beaten Trump.

Still doesn't mean all that much in terms of Biden just managing to win the 77,744 votes that Hillary couldn't.

Biden would probably lose NV though and maybe NH if he was a worse fit for it than Hillary meaning he’d lose 270-268.

I think the most likely scenario is he wins PA MI WI but loses NV so he wins with the infamous 272 firewall

In retrospect, Bernie Sanders would have been the ideal candidate for Democrats to nominate that year once Republicans settled on Donald Trump.
