As HST alluded to, blue is the international (or at least anglophone) color of right-wing parties, and red the international color of left-wing parties. Dave's Atlas colors bring us into alignment. The only serious argument I could see being made would be changing Dems to gold/yellow for liberalism, though barring the emergence of a serious left-wing alternative I'd caution against that.

I enjoy maroon being a darker shaded red avatar and swapping to standard colors would sorta break that. I could see it being useful for the new Atlas map generator but not for the avatars and low resolution maps we used to (and often still do) use.

Plus, I'm sure changing every election results page on the non-forum site would be a nightmare.

Yes.

"Blue states" and "red states" have become as entrenched as any other concept in our politics at this point, and deliberately reversing them just seems pointlessly defiant.

The ability to swap colors in the new map maker is a step in the right direction, but -- while I acknowledge it would probably take some effort and time -- I think it's  worthwhile for the site to adopt the universal standards over time
