Before the Spanish came in the 1400s, the area I live in was populated by the Guanche people. My town in particular was split between the 2 fiefdoms of Telde and Gáldar (interestingly Telde and Gáldar are still real towns today)

After the Spanish came, the city of "Las Palmas de Gran Canaria" was founded in 1478, originally as the military fort of "Real de Las Palmas".

It was the first town in the entire island and it hasn't ever changed its name or ownership so the story is quite boring Tongue

"Guanche" actually refers to the aboriginal inhabitants of Tenerife, our island Gran Canaria was called Tamarán and its inhabitants the Canarii. The name of the archipelago is derived from the latter Anyway "Guanche" is the usual way to refer all the Canarian Aborigines and the English Wikipedia entry keeps that name (the Spanish entry is entitled "aborígenes canarios")

It's possible that I have some remote aboriginal ancestry through the male line (La Palma), but it's hard to know the proportion of Berber blood that runs in my veins after five centuries
