https://www.cnbc.com/2021/01/26/gamestop-shares-are-jumping-again-but-short-sellers-arent-backing-down.html

Has caused the stock to increase by  6 times in 1 month.

Basically Gamestop was doing sh**t so it was being shorted aka when you ask for a "loan" of a stock and promise to repay the lender the back with the stock itself at whatever price it was. However it turns out they shorted too many shares, and along with Gamestop getting some decent news recently it meant one company or a large group of people could buy up the remaining supply of stocks which means it would be much harder to pay of the stock short. Infact there were literally more shorted shares than actual market shares available.

Anyway LOL!

In reality it isn't just a subreddit, but other stuff too.

Good. I've never been a fan of Wall Street, they are a big problem when it comes to companies and how they treat workers.

I may be economically illiterate, and I think that shorting and hedge funds are bad, so nice to see them being screwed Tongue

Also, it is worth noting that a small (key word: small) bump would have been expected given how the PS5 just launched. Here is a post someone made 2 weeks ago in a video games forum I visit. It seems Reddit timed it perfectly.

I almost wish GameStop wasn't doing well though. It is a notoriously Bad Company to work for, and would love to see it fall prey to smaller chains.

It won't. It's falling prey to online distribution.

It'll probably hit 400 at least by the end of the day at the rate things are going lol

Side note, this really puts into perspective how much money these people have. Like, at the end of the day, this is basically just a couple hedge fund managers who got too greedy being vultures and are now having their lunch money taken, and now there are multiple multimillionaires just from this. But there's so much more wealth being hoarded than this; this is really just a drop in the bucket

There are already rules preventing pretty much this exact type of activity for more traditional channels of investing...?

Of course, for every Citron, there's people who can follow the intuition of the (as they refer to themselves) apes on r/wsb and make some money:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-blackrock-investment-gamestop/blackrock-may-have-raked-in-2-4-billion-on-gamestops-retail-driven-stock-frenzy-idUSKBN29W22T

Power to the players indeed. This saga has been interesting for me: hard to argue that democratization of trading (via commission-free brokers) is a bad thing for main street, as risky as it is. Should be worth a mention in a think tank about how to spread it more.

I mean, is there any difference between investing in this and investing in Bitcoin?
