Giants remain ahead in first, Braves failed to do their job to defeat Giants, the Giants and Dodgers are gonna run out the clock playing D Backs, Rockies and Padres, whom they beat easily

It's a Giants v Dodgers pregnant NL Title Game Playoff series anyways, bit Dodgers play better at Giants anyways

Georgia Moderate and his Braves choke again, just like they lost to Dodgers last yr, that's as far as they're gonna go

Haven't heard from him lately since Braves cratered

Freddy Freeman is definitely an All Star but he isn't David Justice or Chipper Jones and iffy if he goes to Hall of Fame

Eddie Rosario just became the second Brave this season to hit for the cycle.  Freddie Freeman did it on August 18th.  Both did it in their first four at-bats of the game.

St Louis just finished off the second half of the double header to bring the winning streak up to fourteen. Ties a franchise record set in 1935

Other game notes:
O’Neil and Goldy both homered (twice in the former’s case), bringing the season totals up to 31 and 30 respectively

Yadier Molina got his 400th career double and is sitting on 998 career RBIs

Jack Flaherty and Dakota Hudson both saw their first big league action after their injuries. Flaherty was rough, but I think was pitching better than box score is gonna make it look. Hudson looks to be ready to pick up where he left off. I don’t expect either in the rotation, but it’ll be nice to have them as options in the pens for a playoff run.

It’s fun to watch Harrison Bader play baseball. I think more people should know that.

Was just about to the post that.

For the uninitiated, the Cardinals first season was in 1882 (as the Brown Stockings of American Association), so setting a record is kind of a huge deal.  They are also now 5.5 games up on Philadelphia for the wild card, a race in which they were decisive underdogs two weeks ago.

Also, on the Harrison Bader is fun front, 4 hits, 3 runs, 2 steals, 2 RBI, and homer today. And Yadier Molina got a hit, pulling him ahead of Rogers Hornsby for 3rd on the franchise leaderboard.

Dodgers committed a comedy of errors when they have been so disciplined

They are feeling the pressure of trying to catch Giants and they haven't been able to

They swept DBacks last time and the DBacks have returned the favor

With the Braves leading the Padres 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th, Will Smith walked the bases full -- and stranded them there by striking out the side.  Combined with the Phillies' loss to the Pirates today, the Braves are now up by 2.5 games (3 in the loss column) with the Phils coming to Atlanta for a 3-game series starting Tuesday night.

Love me some Giancarlo

He's been frustrating, but it really is nice to see him playing to his potential once again. There really isn't another player like him*, so it's nice that we get to watch his full talent on display. I've been critical because it felt like another player lacking the clutch gene that the Yankees have gotten so many times, but he has fully dispelled that now. Glad to be wrong.

*Baseball Reference says Juan Gonzalez as most similar - not sure if that feels right. It feels most similar to Gary Sheffield for me, but even so much better than that "Should Be" Hall of Famer. Stanton 70 homeruns ahead through the same age.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, a consistent healthy Stanton could top 600 home runs. I don't think that happens anymore, but it's not entirely impossible.

Giants swept the Rockies in Mile-High. Usually they can manage 1/3 at home, but not this time.

The Braves win a tense pitchers’ duel 2-1 over the Phillies, pushing the latter closer to elimination.

The Dodgers swept the DBacks and they lost to them when they played them again, they have a bunch of Rookies that came from AAA

The Padres sux

All sports have a luxury cap and Cali teams are the best in the World they pay more for their players than any other state

It's a waste of talent to have teams Mid Majors in Major Leagues DBacks, Jax Jaguar, Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Hawks

The Lakers are gonna make a run for the Warriors record of 73(9 and with DeShsun Jackson Rams and Stafford have the Superbowl in LA this yr

🎵 There ain't no party like a Cardinals party! 🎵
🎵 Don't stop movin' to the Redbird Redbird beat . 🎵

The St. Louis Cardinals cannot be stopped, as they not only won their 17th game in a row, but also the 2nd NL Wild Card spot in a 6-2 win over the Brewers.

Tonight's playoff spot clinch by the Cardinals for the 2nd NL Wild Card spot happened on the 10-year anniversary of the miracle run to clinch the sole NL Wild Card spot en route to winning it all.

which successful franchises fans are, in your opinion, not insufferable?

(though I'm not sure if we can even call the Braves a successful franchise, what with them only winning the "big one" once in the last 60+ years.)

There is an inverse correlation between saying ‘Cardinals fans are insufferable’ and ‘amount of Cardinals fans known’. Honestly, it became a meme because a Deadspin writer was annoyed at one of his editors and the media picked up on it because the traditional villains (the Yankees) weren’t good at the time.

I imagine something is similar for most hated fan bases.

Anyway, in other news, the streak got snapped at 17 games today. But going from hovering around 500 and waiting for elimination to punching a ticket to the playoffs as the hottest team in baseball is remarkable.

EDIT: Just want to note the irony of a Massachusetts AV calling anyone else’s sports fans insufferable

Can we investigate the Padres for throwing games? That literally looked like batting practice there.

On a whim I decided to go with my dad to the game this evening. It was the first time I'd been since the last time the Giants won the World Series seven years ago. It seemed like half the fans in attendance had their phones out watching the Dodgers game. Other than when the game's one run scored, the two largest years came when Alex Smith was shown on the screen and when Manny Machado homered off Max Scherzer. At the end of the game, the cheers when the Giants won were followed by equally large cheers at the scoreboard showing that the Padres were losing the Dodgers. On the way out of the game fans were chanting "beat LA" just like old times. It was a great environment.

On the way home I put on the Dodgers game on the radio, and Jayce Tingler must have realized that he had money on the Dodgers. I've never seen anything like it.

During last night's Braves game, one of the announcers noted that as recently as Sep. 7, the Cardinals had only a 2.9% chance of making the playoffs (per Fangraphs).  Truly one of the most remarkable runs in recent years.
