Taking it wayyy back here... In the first and second primary debates, many of the Democratic candidates spent a lot of time running against Obama--specifically on healthcare and immigration. It was clear that the candidates realized this was a mistake, as they toned the criticisms of Obama's shortcomings way down in future debates. However, I find myself wondering, why did they ever think it was a good idea to attack the most popular politician in the country, especially one so beloved by Democrats?

1. Harris brief rise in the polls. Literally no one I knew had her as a first choice despite knowing several Sanders, Biden, and Warren fans. Her fall made a lot more sense

2. Buttigieg media attention. This guy barely cracked 5-10% in the polls and polled underwater in the general to Trump but he was a media darling. Really?

3. Andrew Yang's media attention. This er couldn't even get 1% in the polls but got lots of media attention and had the nerve to demand the DNC allow him at every debate

4. Having two whole debates of 20 people when literally no one wanted that. Why not have an undercard debate?

5. Everyone counting Biden out despite only a few states having voted

6. Bloomberg casually spending a billion dollars for one delegate and thinking he had a chance

Just the Sanders wing of the party in general.

Attacking Kamala for mixing up Tupac with other rappers, by using an out of context quote. This somehow disqualifies her for the presidency.

Claiming Joe Biden has dementia.

Claiming Pete Buttigieg was a CIA plant and "stole" the Iowa Caucus.

I saw a lot of them on Reddit calling for voter suppression of black people on Super Tuesday after the South Carolina primary.

They just exposed themselves as very privileged and ugly human beings in general. I hope the Democratic party never panders to them again because they very nearly cost us our democracy. Sanders and Warren would have been destroyed in the general election.

Are Reddit and Twitter the same as real life now?

The whole Mike Gravel “candidacy” is up there.

Deval Patrick entering late and seeming to expect the party to see him as some kind of savior for some reason.

Oh and let’s not forget Marianne Williamson calling for the power of love to beat Trump on the debate stage.

2. Buttigieg media attention. This guy barely cracked 5-10% in the polls and polled underwater in the general to Trump but he was a media darling. Really?

On Buttigieg, he was a weirdly consistent 4th or 5th place throughout pretty much the whole primary process until he dropped out. Kinda impressive for a thirty-something former mayor to consistently beat out sitting governors and senators.

Definitely the whole messiness of the Iowa caucuses.

Just the Sanders wing of the party in general.

Beto speaking Spanish. Cory Booker's face in that situation summed it up all too perfectly.

Joe Biden's constant gaffes

Beto/Booker speaking Spanish

Clinton accusing Tulsi of being a "Russian asset"

"Bernie said a woman can never be president"

Buttigieg's constant cringe inducing moments

"Klobmentum"

The campaign of John Delaney

Bloomberg spending billions for one delegate

- The amount of oxygen that Medicare For All sucked up.
- That anyone thought Bloomberg was electable.
- The lack of discussion about Biden’s authorship of three crime bills.
- The lack of discussion about marijuana policy.

I think there's a pretty strong argument IMO that Buttigieg was the 3rd place finisher and Warren got 4th. Obviously not in delegates, since Warren stayed on through Super Tuesday, but in the period where both had a realistic shot and were in the race, Buttigieg won significantly more.

Biden winning the trifecta of ME, MN and MA.

I thought Biden could Minnesota after the Klobuchar endorsement, but the other two basically ended Bernie's chances.

All of those random members of congress endorsing Bloomberg for president during that one week.

Mike Gravel's campaign being run by literal high schoolers.

The NYT double endorsing Klobuchar and Warren. Their hour-long documentary was also very stupid.

The birther attacks against Harris.

That one month where Biden's support was being sucked up by Bloomberg and it looked like he was about to drop out.

Tulsi's feud with Hillary Clinton.

The online obsession with Yang. Seriously though, I still don't understand it.

Joe Sestak's candidacy.

Marianne Williamson.
