Josh Mandel calls on Mike DeWine to lift Ohio's COVID restrictions.

Quote
Josh Mandel, a Republican candidate for the Senate in Ohio, is waging an unadulterated campaign to pull his party further to the right, in part by trashing the state's Republican governor.

A day after governors in Mississippi and Texas lifted mask mandates and other guidelines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, Mandel on Wednesday called on Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine to do the same.

"I think Mike DeWine is a squishy establishment politician who went along with the peer pressure and the groupthink of liberal media and other squishy governors around the country when he should have been a leader," Mandel, a former two-term state treasurer, said in an interview.

Mandel's remarks escalate his bid to position himself as the Republican most in sync with former President Donald Trump in the race to succeed GOP Sen. Rob Portman, who will not seek another term next year.

Mandel has amplified the lie that the election was stolen from Trump. He has relentlessly attacked an opponent, former Ohio Republican Party Chair Jane Timken, for the nice things she said about a Republican House member who voted to impeach Trump. And since he appeared last week at the CPAC conference for conservative activists in Florida, Mandel has branded DeWine — whose career in Republican politics goes back to 1977, when Mandel was born — with words like "squishy" and "RINO," meaning Republican In Name Only.

In another sign that he wants to carve out his own far-right lane in a primary campaign that could soon be crowded with other pro-Trump conservatives, Mandel asserted Wednesday that masks are not effective against the coronavirus.

"There's no science or math that shows that it's been helpful," he said, overlooking data and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other experts that confirms that properly covering your mouth and nose helps prevent the spread of viral particles.

"No," Mandel replied when asked whether he would continue wearing a mask in public if DeWine lifts the mandate. "We need to stop the mask mandates immediately. And I will stop wearing a mask. I have the freedom to make decisions based on what's best for me and my family. And this has gone way overboard."

He's running to the bottom of the barrel, but then again, this isn't that different from what most Republicans are doing these days anyhow.

Vance was just on Tucker whining about Meghan Markle. Probably means nothing, but this thread has a purpose darn it.

Mandel is partly right, although the Covid restrictions doesn't need to be lifted, DeWine is the weakest Red state Gov the get reelected he only won by three, due to Tim Ryan appeal to WC females and he has never lost an election.

Cooper was hurt and won by only 4 pts due to his Restrictions as well.

Doesn’t matter, I gave up on Ohio the minute Sherrod Brown’s result was to the right of the nation in 2018 midterms. In comparison, Baldwin/Casey’s margins were well to the left of the nation in 2018. If they’re to the right of the nation with an D-incumbent in a year where the GOP base stayed home, how can you expect to win an open seat?

Ohio’s not PA/WI where Dems will win 85-90% of the time as long as their base shows up. Even with Ryan on the ballot, those demographic trends+brain drain are just too much to overcome. Maybe he gets to 47-48% but I have a hard time seeing him get 50%+1.

Tl;dr: Likely R and closer to Safe R than Lean R

Lol D's have an excellent chance for Ryan to win, Biden has a 54% Approvals. You can't apply normal Midterm dynamics, with Biden has same Approvals as Bush W, in 2002, D's can win MA Gov and OH Gov and Senate.

Likely R for now but it's not Nov 2022 yet, things can change, Trump flipped Mahoning County, he overperformed and Sherrod Brown won in a Trump Midterms.  Rs aren't gonna win Mahoning County again

Underestimate Ryan as you wish, he hasn't lost a single race before, and losing the nomination doesn't count

Before Nov 2022/ I will be glad to donate to everyone on my list

Vance is one actually someone I could easily see blowing it, actually.  That said, I doubt he runs and if he does then he won’t be the nominee.

How much does this mean, though? Vance seems like a sort-of-strong candidate on paper if only for money and name recognition, but it seems like his brand of "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" conservatism is a little distinct from the "hail Lord Trump" brand that's the main style for the GOP right now.

Like do OH political people think Vance is a paper tiger or a potential nominee?

People accuse democrats of being condeseend and unsympathetic to poor white communities, but republican can run a guy who literarly claims there problems are cultural and he'll win them in a landslide.

It's a Trump+8 state that is trending R in a Biden midterm. Sure, it could be single digits, but the chances of a Democrat winning it are very slim.
Ah, who am I kidding? Tim Ryan will win by being #populist because the Republican candidate will just be an establishment hack. Lean D IMO

It's a Trump state but Ds have won it before and will win it again as Sherrod Brown won in a Midterm in 2018 against Renacci, Trump won Mahoning County before the Insurrectionists, the Rs are at rock bottom with Females and Minorities. The Rs aren't gonna win Mahoning County again like they did in 2020 where AA live

What do people think about the effort to draft Jimmy Dore for Senate in Ohio?

The Cincinnati Enquirer has already pretty much anointed Amy Acton as the Democratic nominee, even though she's a Republican who worked for Mike DeWine. Who are real progressives supposed to vote for if Acton is the nominee?

I'm a socialist and I find Jimmy Dore to be viscerally unpleasant. I would happily support someone with his politics who isn't a complete dick
