On a personal level, absolute human garbage. As a president, similarly pretty bad although one of the best foreign policies of any president.

Taken all for all, one of the better presidents we've had. That either isn't saying much, or is saying quite a lot, depending on your perspective.

Mediocre. But how bad most of the other presidents of his era were redeems him somewhat, as he looks pretty good compared to them.

Agreed, he was easily the best gilded age president imo. Only Grant comes close.

Comes out as HP on balance. Did some good stuff on civil service reform and opposed imperialism, but his economic policies were bad overall and he was also pretty reactionary on social issues, especially his staunch opposition to women's sufferage to the very end.

You know what he appointed two segregationist to SCOTUS, Melvin Fuller and Edward D White that affirmed Pleasy v Ferguson, Segregation laws

Oh no! They weren't perfect! While Fuller was responsible for Pleasy, he also authored Gonzales v. Williams, which affirmed that Porto Ricans were U.S. nationals (tho not necessarily U.S. citizens) by being citizens of an unincorporated U.S. territory. (It wasn't until the 1917 Jones–Shafroth Act that Porto Ricans automatically gained U.S. citizenship.) White authored the opinion in Guinn that struck down grandfather clauses used to make it easier for whites to vote by exempting them from the stringent requirements that were applied to non-whites.

This. Any leftist who gives a full-throated FF rating to the President who had the (possibly non-consenting) mother of his child locked in an asylum, sent in active-duty military as strikebreakers, and insisted that "sensible and responsible women do not want to vote" is no leftist for me.

If by "small-government" you mean "agressively wielding the power of the state in service of the owning class" then sure, I guess he was.

Wouldn’t the silver standard have caused inflation?

Only because silver coins were overvalued.  If we had switched to a silver standard with larger silver coins, then that wouldn't have necessarily been inflationary.

"A little inflation now and then is a good thing."
