Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health

I was leaning towards Battlefield Earth myself but this is also a good choice.

A picture of my family, probably.

You know, now that Harry Potter's been cancelled and all.

My grandfather's Bible unless there had been some sort of kerfuffle about my religion during the election (always a danger with left-of-center Catholic candidates given how partisan the USCCB is), in which case I'd go with a copy of the Ox-Herding Pictures to own the trads.

The Constitution and a copy of Meditations.

Invocation by an imam (as none have been so far) and a Quaker benediction.

Most oaths I've taken were only by raising my hand. When I did take an oath that included a ceremonial document I used my wife's family Bible.

I'm not an American so couldn't become president.  Nevertheless we in Britain have the swearing in of MPs which is similar.

Despite being a devout Christian I would NOT swear on the bible because Christ himself said not to swear by heaven or by God (or at all).  Therefore I would solemnly affirm.

Here we swear allegiance to the Queen.  I can't square that with my distrust of the idea of monarchy so I would add on that thing that republicans say about their primary loyalty being to the people that elected them.

So I would be in the bizarre situation of being the only Christian conservative to Solemnly Affirm and to waffle the anti-monarchy line.

I am glad that I am not the only one in the thread who reasons that way.

My copy of the Constitution. If it was good enough for John Quincy Adams (okay, he technically ended up having to be sworn in on a book of law, but he wanted to swear on a copy of the Constitution), then it's good enough for any President.

FYI....for everyone saying they'd use a copy of the U.S. Constitution:  swearing to uphold the Constitution upon the Constitution doesn't make any logical sense.  Swearing upon something only works because violating your oath then becomes a defilement of the thing you swore upon.  If you want a non-religious inauguration, just let your "I do" suffice without the need for extra texts.

I don't agree. A person is only as good as their words and actions. If you truly believe in the Constitution, there can be no greater act than to swear upon its text. Swearing upon a text is something that is deeply personal to each individual. The text they choose should reflect that. A person doesn't even have to swear upon a text. They could choose anything they want or nothing at all. All that is required is to take the oath itself.

I would choose to swear upon the original copy of the Constitution (and the amendments).

Even if you're the President-elect, I don't think the National Archives would be cool with that. The relatively ancient pages aren't exactly portable like binded books are.

Haha, I had a feeling someone was going to bring that up. As the incoming POTUS or VPOTUS, I'm pretty sure I would get my way. However, it could be done in a respectful manner that preserves the text. Perhaps it could be laying the hand on an enclosure that contains the original Constitution. I can think of no greater thing to swear upon than the actual Constitution itself.

Idk about that. Ngl, I just don't see the National Archives having any qualms whatsoever about declining such a request.

If I did I would not have access to that document, since my wife would disown me.
