If Breyer kicked the bucket today, I have no doubt Trump and Mitch would confirm someone in the next 5 days.

I'm 100 %. No hearings. And every senate republicans would be okay with it

He should step down whenever he wants. (Normal, sane)

From the perspective of the left he obviously should. RBG made a colossal mistake.

Would be a good strategic move. In hindsight it was somewhat selfish of RBG to stay all that time and not step down at some point when Obama was in office.

Ginsburgs plan was to have Hillary replace her

She should never have counted on that.  Holding the Presidency longer than eight years is very rare.

Yes, and thankfully there's not a cult of personality surrounding him (and getting inside his head) that thinks he's immortal.

And she screwed the pooch when it mattered most.

Yes.  I'd rather have Biden pick his replacement than Harris (yes, I'm still unconvinced Biden can make it all 4 years)

OK, Mitch is officially gone. The clock is ticking, Breyer.

This is mild. She claimed that no one could possibly replace her.

He should step down today. But I guess he will once KBJ has had enough time on the DC Circuit.

Yeah, probably, but if he’s going to do it he should do it right away. Currently the Senate is one Joe Manchin run for governor (and they currently have a Republican governor) away from being controlled by Cocaine Mitch.

The second Ossoff and Warnock were declared the winners in the runoffs is when he should have started considering his retirement plans. I expect (and hope) he will retire this autumn, after the Supreme Court term, at the latest.

Yes and Breyer should make his retirement contingent on Senate confirmation of his successor.  There is precedent for this -- former Justice Sandra Day O'Connor took that route.
