Bolsonaro response to this was to call Maduro... fat.

Bolsonaro: "Some idiots say, I see it around there, praising 'look at Maduro, what a big heart he has'. Indeed, with that size he has, his heart must be very big. Nothing more than that“

Bolsonaro sounds more like a mean drag queen roasting the physical looks of other world leaders in a comedy performance than a real president.

It’s not first time he has done something like this. In 2019 it was pretty big news when he insulted the wife of the French president, Brigitte Macron, insinuating she was ugly after comparing her with his own wife.

His motives are obvious but at least he is doing something good for a change, even if the intentions are out of self interest.

Why in the world is the Brazilian government accepting their help anyway? The optics of such a move does not look good domestically nor in Bolsonaro’s international handlers.

Bolsonaro is faux populist corporate slime. Maduro has issues but has kept Venezuela free and out of the hands of CIA agent Guaido.

This is my opinion on the Venezuelan situation going back years. I have multiple posts on here from 2018/2019 saying the exact same thing. Try again.

If Brazilian government refused help in a critical moment when tons of people are dying (Manaus health system collapsed), it would look even worse domestically and favor the left’s argument that Bolsonaro is deliberately murdering his population.

Venezuela was the only country offering this help. It was either that or no oxygen since Bolsonaro is too incompetent to develop good domestic logistics that transport oxygen to the middle of Amazonas.

Brazilian celebrities also bought oxygen and transported it to Manaus. Civilian response taking matters into their own hands + international help is necessary when there’s government inaction.

to be honest, while his motives are obvious, this raised my opinion of Maduro a lot. I think I can now say I prefer Maduro over Guaido, from a non-western perspective. He is still not a good person, but neither is the incompetent opposition...

I'd never expect him to be a full on populist, after all from what I've read he and Fidesz had a very standard conservative lean as recently as the early 2000s. However, he has held the line on migration into Hungary, the most important issue in the long run. Hopefully once the culture bounces back, there will be more European leaders/parties adopting both pro-working class and anti-immigration policies, as has (sort of) occurred recently in Denmark.

Unpopular opinion, but I feel like the debacle in 2019 turned this issue into a very black and white one when there's a lot more nuance. Maduro is obviously not a perfect leader, or even a good one, but it is also true that he is not an irredeemably evil man like Kim Jong-un or Joseph Stalin or something, so this move isn't that surprising to me. Good move and good trolling of Bolsonazi.

Western democracy may be flawed, but the answer is not to embrace everyone and everything opposed to it.

The situation in Amazonas must be really dire, and Brasilia doing absolutely nothing, for the local government to end up resorting to aid from venezuela, a failed state, of all places. Though i feel bad for the venezuelan doctors fighting covid in their country, their health system collapsed many years ago, but still, surely whatever is still functioning would benefit from that oxygen that Maduro so readily gives away to other countries, just to get some good publicity.

He has made Maduro look good in comparison, which maybe totally sums him up.

People here aren't just criticizing Bolsonaro, they're Maduro apologizing, which is reprehensible. Do remember that Maduro is sending this foreign aid while his own country continues to suffer. Its all PR.
