Biden's administration is being smart by finally acknowledging the nation's indigenous communities. They're a big reason why Democrats like him are able to win Arizona after all, he certainly owes them (actually, we all owe them!) and this is a great start.

He'd still have to cancel the permits to do this. Building permits only apply to the specific lots they're applied for.

If a GOP president wins in 2025, or 2029, they would just open back the permit. I know Kristi Noem would do that in a jiffy.

Can someone explain to me why Canada has to have this pipeline go through the United States? Why don't they build a pipeline to Vancouver or something?

The idea is that Western Canadian Crude trades at a discount to more widely known benchmarks like West Texas, due to a bottleneck in pipeline capacity. Hence, expanding pipeline capacity should reduce the spread and increase margins for the Athabasca tar sands.

There's an ongoing project called Trans Mountain that expands an existing dilbit pipeline from Alberta to near Vancouver. The approval process for that dragged on for so long that the federal government of Canada bought it out.

Trudeau is probably relieved at Biden's decision, since he no longer has to spend political capital selling the project at home.

I'd love to be a fly in Jason Kenney's office. I would probably get killed by chunk of his exploding head, though.

It will be so good that America's President finally takes climate change seriously again, and he can lead the world rather than being left behind.

The Canadian right wing is about to be extremely triggered. Excellent. This is also good policy IMO. Owning the right is just icing on top. I don't advocate for policy designed to "own the libs / right" just for the sake of it.

There you go. A totally crazy decision on the first day. Who knows how many more crazy decisions of this kind will hit us by January 2025.

Definitely a strong campaign point in 2022.

Biden needs to have a much better reason than "I don't like pipelines" when he cancels the permit at this stage or he'll end up with some major legal egg on his face.

Incidentally, the idea that cancelling this pipeline will significantly impact either the development of Alberta's tar sands or climate change is ludicrous. Oil prices will be of far greater impact on the development of the tar sands than whether the resulting oil is transported by pipelines or railcars.

Opposition to pipelines comes primarily from ignorance over the other methods that can and would be used to transport oil and gas in their absence.  As a method of transporting oil and gas, pipelines are the most ecologically sound. Blocking pipelines won't prevent POL extraction.  At most, they'll affect which POL reserves are extracted first.

If I remember correctly, tribal issues were already resolved by the courts in favor of the pipeline builder.  If that's Biden's reason for revoking the permit, he'll lose in court, and lose early.  As I stated earlier, he's going to need something considerably more substantial than "I think pipelines are bad" if he doesn't want to get slapped down as hard as Giuliani arguing why the courts should have overturned Trump losing the election.

The only reason I approve of this is because this is what the natives want, and after they have been screwed with for so long, if this is what they want, I think they should get it. Otherwise without them in the picture I’d be mad at Biden for this.

Unclear what this is, could you elaborate?

I do find the claim that pipelines are the most eco-friendly method of oil delivery a bit suspect. It’s like calling a needle the healthiest way to shoot up.
