Wouldnt Obama or McCain have an easier time appealing to third parties and independents? or was 2004 strictly a referendum on Bush and nothing else

Possibly due to the (correct) expectation of a very close race in 2004, combined with memories of 2000; I'm sure a lot of people who would have voted Libertarian or Green voted Republican or Democratic as a consequence. In contrast, 2008 wasn't close, nor was it forecast to be.
