So there would be a governor and no longer be a mayor?

Also when can you expect to hear from the Parliamentarian re: the filibuster?

I don't think the Parliamentarian does that kind of thing on non-reconciliation bills.

Actually maybe not. They could rename the post to governor, and no where does it say a state has to have a governor or a bicameral legislature and an elected executive, theoretically a state him could have any form of government so long as the constitution is approved by congress.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but do y'all think Douglass would divide the new state into different counties and municipalities? Like would Georgetown be made into a new municipality with its own mayor and council? Who would be made governor until the next election, Bowser?

EDIT: I actually doubt any new counties would be made, but I wouldn't be all that surprised to see some outer neighborhoods be granted independent municipal status.

Local government in the district ended in 1871. Prior to that there was Washington County and the municipalities of Georgetown and Washington City.  Pre-retrocession there was also Alexandria County and Alexandria City.

Yes but theoretically hypothetical situations aren't the topic of discussion here - H.R. 51 is - & it provides for the Mayor becoming the Governor.

Schumer can check with her if it's needed or not. If she says no, maybe Manchin & Sinema come along.

King is a moderate he isn't a lefty and he voted against the Minimum wage, he said he will take his time and evaluate the Statehood

King isn't Sara Gideon but if votes against Statehood, it's gonna be his head, D's want him to retire in 2022 not 2024 so that Mills can appoint Sara Gideon for 2024

DC statehood is actually really good for Sinema and Manchin's schtick. Two more Dem Senators means one of them could actually break and vote with Republicans while still allowing the bill to pass. It gives them cover to actually vote like moderate heroes without actually jeopardizing the Democratic agenda. It's a win for everyone except Republicans, as all things should be.

The fact this post has 15 likes shows how rotted the Atlas pundit-think is, lol

Like, what do you think their "shtick" even is?  do you think they just enjoy the Politico intrigue for its own sake?  or might it be that they are more able to effectively deliver for their constituents (i.e., the people who actually put them into office, not the liberal Twitteratti) by positioning themselves as the 50th vote?

And even if they did play their "shticks" solely for the cable news fame, why would they give that up for D.C. statehood?  If they wanted to give Schumer carte blanche to run the Senate, they already could.

D.C.'s municipal government already does all the things that the other fifty state governments do, so there's really no reason for statehood to change anything about its local government.

Even if this bill passed which it won't due to the Filibuster, SCOTUS can strike it down ACB or Kavanaugh or Alito or Gorsuch or Thomas aren't for this and they will put an injunction on sitting new Senators being sword in, pending Crt challenge

Today is a great day to call your Senator and encourage them to end the filibuster so we can pass HR 1 and DC Statehood.

So far the GOP rhetoric against it has been so ignorant like rising crime despite crime rising everywhere else, population requirements despite already passing two states in population, or the idea that there is no car dealership in which there is one. It clear they have no messaging strategy for the public sphere or in the courts other than "if DC is made a state it will elect Democrats". Right now the only thing Republicans have to hang on to is Manchin. The fact that he hasn't definitely come out against statehood other than joking that he supports adding DC to WV suggests his position is not enough to secure Republicans' nervousness.

No car dealership? What? We would all be much better off if we eliminated the dealership model and just bought directly from the manufacturer and cut out all the scammers and artificial price increases they come with.

Halfway home! It took 3 months from Biden's inauguration to get this far. I think July 22 is a great over/under for DC becoming the 51st state. July 4 would be a nice symbolic date, given the "taxation without representation" aspect of this issue.
