Donald Trump runs for president in 1996 and becomes the Republican nominee in a crowded field. Like in 2016, he runs a populist campaign that's focused on illegal immigration, opposition to free trade and "law and order". He's basically a higher energy Ross Perot, who doesn't run in this scenario. How does Trump's message resonate and how does he perform in the general?

The country wasn’t ready for that type of populism yet so I think this would be the map

Clinton still wins AZ and FL, adds VA.

Clinton wins by roughly the same margin as real life, with only 1 or 2 possible states flipping in his favor

Without Perot , Clinton loses Arizona by 4 points to Dole and against Trump it would be like by 2. Trump would win FL as he does better in panhandle and gets Perot voters and in Virginia , Dole wins it by over 5 without Perot while Trump wins it by 2

Clinton wins a clear NPV mandate and picks up VA and GA, while losing AZ and (narrowly) KY. Political climate in 1996 was not there to elect Trumpism.

✓ President Bill Clinton (D-AR)/Vice President Al Gore (D-TN): 389 EVs.; 53.9%
Mr. Donald J. Trump (R-NY)/Senator Trent Lott (R-MS): 149 EVs.; 43.2%

Trump is a better candidate than Dole because a trash bag with wheels and a radio inside of it with an R next to it's name would've done as well was Dole. That being said he still only does slightly better.
