I could see Tanden run into issues from the right(democrats) and maybe Vilsack and Raimondo run into issues from the left( Sanders, Warren, Merkley maybe).

Tanden is infinitely more likely to run into issue with progressives than with moderates, given her prior conduct.

Harris will resign her Senate seat tomorrow and swear in Warnoff and Padilla on Wednesday.
Not Pence on the 19th? Anyways you forgot Ossoff as well

No, I didn’t forget him.

And yes, it is confirmed that all 3 Senators want to be sworn in by Harris and not by Pence.

None of their swearing-in dates (let alone who they want to be sworn-in by) have yet to be confirmed, so I don't know what the basis of your claim is. Not only does Politico say that "it's unclear when Padilla will take the oath of office this week, or whether it will be administered by Harris," but the AP says that Raffensperger "could [certify the Georgia runoffs] as soon as Tuesday, conceivably allowing Padilla, Ossoff and Warnock to join the Senate together as early as that afternoon's session."

You cannot call the actions of seemingly everybody else on this forum "cringe," then do this & expect to remain credible.

Schumer just came on and said that the Senate is going to start debate on HR 335 (the waiver), so we may have a Defense Secretary by the end of the day.

Unfortunately nope, the actual confirmation vote itself is gonna be taking place tomorrow after some Senators requested time to review Austin's written responses to further Armed Services Committee questioning.

Absolutely fascinating list. Kinda surprised Sanders isn't one of the nays

Seeing that he & Biden have actually been friends for a long time, I think it's just a matter of - as Pelosi asked House Democratic Caucus members to do today - giving the President the benefit of the doubt.

ICYMI:

Question:

Is Harris supposed to swear in every cabinet member that got confirmed by the Senate ?

Other than the Chief Justice swearing in the President and the Speaker of the House being sworn in by the Dean and then swearing in everyone else, who swears in whom is a little ad hoc in the United States. Technically anybody with the ability to legally witness oaths can swear in any officeholder, even the President; LBJ was sworn in by a federal district judge in Dallas, Coolidge by his own father, a State of Vermont notary public.

Case-in-point - Austin's ceremonial swearing-in with Harris will take place on Monday, but somebody else who's legally able to swear him in nevertheless did so today so that he could immediately take office:

Lloyd Austin has been confirmed as the Defense Secretary by the Senate. Vote was 93-2.

The 2 no votes were from Mike Lee and Josh Hawley. 5 senators did not vote.

Wow, didn't expect him to get that many votes. Uncle Joe was really made great picks.

And the most beautiful thing about this swearing-in picture is Kamala in the vice president's office where she belongs.

Just wait 'til she's in the Oval.

Boo.

That is ridiculous. Schumer is in control of the floor agenda already, isn't he? Why isn't he rushing this more?

Unanimous consent would've been required to hold the vote this quickly, so they might've gotten word that somebody (Hawley?) was gonna prevent that from occurring.

Schumer announced earlier tonight that Yellen's confirmation vote will take place on Monday at 5:30pm.

Side question, what happens if the Dean is elected as Speaker?

Then somebody else can swear them in. Even the Chief Justice swearing in the President & the Dean swearing in the Speaker are mere conventions, even though they're more strictly followed than that of the VP swearing-in Cabinet officials.

So, on the Senate website, this is what I am seeing for the upcoming week:

Monday, January 25
Yellen (Treasury); full Senate vote

Tuesday, January 26
Raimondo (Commerce)
Mayorkas (DHS)

Wednesday, January 27
Granholm (Energy)
Thomas-Greenfield (UN Ambassador)
McDonough (VA)

Thursday, January 28
Fudge (HUD)
Rouse (Council of Economic Advisors Chair)

It also seems like Blinken will probably be confirmed Tuesday or Wednesday. The Foreign Relations committee is meeting on Tuesday...

Energy and UN ambassador are more urgent than Health ?

The Senate seems to have strange priorities ...

It's up to each committee chair when to hold hearings on these nominees, & in contrast to the Energy (still chaired by Murkowski) & Foreign Relations (still chaired by Risch) committees, the Health committee - previously chaired by the now-retired Lamar Alexander - lacks a chair so long as an organizing resolution remains unpassed.

Tomorrow:

10 AM: Raimondo Hearing
11 AM: Business Meeting to approve Mayorkas at the committee level

I'll be watching these and will have commentary if merited.

Also, Blinken's nomination to be Secretary of State will be voted on at noon, & Senators will be sworn-in for the former President's impeachment trial at 2:30pm.

Baring any major revelations, Biden will be the first President since Reagan to go undefeated in his first round of cabinet appointments.

You definitely just jinxed it.

Not really. Tanden will still get confirmed as long as Kamala shows up, the only problem being that the Senate will likely be forced to eat up days of floor time on her nomination too. Moreso bad news for the Senate than for her.

I think that Manchin will vote no on Tanden. Sinema may vote no as well.

Neither of them have said or done a single thing that would indicate their opposition to her.

So no new confirmation vote today? I know there are structural hurdles due to the lack of an OR (speaking of which, maybe get that done ASAP) but this still seems like they're slow-walking it.

It's the Republicans who are slow-walking it now, & there really isn't anything Schumer can do yet other than what he's already done: file a cloture motion, which gets voted on tomorrow & allows the final vote on the nomination to take place on Monday.

As for the OR, it turns out that it's still McConnell who's slow-walking that, as he's been unable to come to an agreement with Schumer in terms of floor amendment procedures (& until that's been passed, there are some nominees - like Becerra - who can't even have their hearings held yet).

So, Becerca (Health) is among the last to be confirmed, during a pandemic situation ?

How stupid are the Senators of the US ?

The Health committee was chaired by Lamar Alexander, who retired, so it cannot meet until the organizing resolution passes.

Already told Tender this, so he either didn't listen or didn't care about the answer.

I noticed that Biden nominated a lot of women as Deputy Ministers in the cabinet.

So, if male ministers are stepping down at some point later on in the term, these women deputies would probably take over and the cabinet would become even at 13-13, or even majority-women.

Depends on the office: Julie Su would probably be the favorite to take over if Marty Walsh were to step down, & Lisa Monaco might be the favorite to take over if Merrick Garland were to ever step down, but lesser-known deputies like Dr. Jewel Bronaugh (for Vilsack), Andrea Palm (for Becerra), Polly Trottenberg (for Buttigieg), & Cindy Martin (for Cardona) might not necessarily be the favorites to take over if any of their principals were to step down.

Huh. Any chance that means they vote on the OR today instead?

I don't think the Senate's coming into work today, the Mayorkas vote was delayed due to the inclement weather.

I really hope Hawley's presidential campaign goes just as well as Gillibrand's did.
