47% of the vote is in -

PAS - 46,9%
PSRM-PCRM - 30,9%
Sor Party - 7,4%

Usatii Alliance - 4%
Dignity&Truth - 2,5%
Democrats - 2,3%

The Sor Party is in free fall by this point. Worth keeping an eye on, it would be great to see them out, but it is unlikely.

Sad about Dignity&Truth meeting its death, an FF party that had it been luckier it could have been a force to be reckoned with. But this is a great night for Moldova and I hope PAS lives up to the expectations of the people who desperately need a better life. They have a tough job ahead of them given that half of Moldovians have left to live abroad and the ones staying can barely feed themselves. Hopefully, PAS will manage to govern competently, or else they will die like the 3 government parties in 2010-2019 which are now out of Parliament.

It seems the exit poll overestimated PAS a bit, but with the high overseas vote still out, they still may surpass the 50% mark and have a 51-28% victory over BECS, right?

Yes. From the looks of it, the most likely outcome is 51-52 for PAS to 27-28 for BECS.

90% of the vote has been reported, and every vote from within the country has been reported. We are waiting exclusively for votes from abroad. So here are the results from within the country -

PAS - 46,8%
PSRM-PCRM - 31,1%
Sor Party - 6,6%

Usatii Alliance - 4,3%
Dignity&Truth - 2,4%
Democrats - 2%

So for all the hype, the votes from abroad actually prove to be pretty inconsequential. And PAS won in the country by 16 points...what a romp is all I have to say.

I calculated the results without the votes from abroad. That's what those numbers are

Over 99% of the votes have been counted so here are the results:

PAS - 52,7%, 63 seats
PSRM-PCRM - 27,2%, 32 seats
Sor Party - 5,8%, 6 seats

Usatii Alliance - 4,1%
Dignity&Truth - 2,3%
Democrats - 1,8%

PAS won the biggest percentage of any party ever in the history of Moldova and will form a pretty stable government, which is news for Moldova. (And I am sure the 63rd guy on the list of PAS never expected to be an MP!)

While Moldova has sadly not gotten rid of Sor, it seems as if the mobster connected with Russia named Renato Usatii (who went so far as to threaten in a debate that he will take care of an opponent) will no longer be a nuisance. He has announced that he will resign after the embarrassing results from both the leadership of his party (which is dead without him) and from the Mayorship of Balti (the second biggest city in which his party came in third). He said he will return to managing businesses (probably illegal ones). Now that he is out and none of his proteges will run for the Mayorship of Balti (according to him), it seems as if the 7-year saga is over.

Following Usatii, the election ends the political aspirations of another politician. Former Interior Minister Andrei Nastase has resigned today from the leadership of Dignity&Truth and says he has no plans in the future involving politics. He has been a key figure in the protests against Plahotniuc and used to be popular in the country but his loss in the 2019 Chisinau mayoral race was the end for both him and his party. Also, the Socialists and Communists have announced they will work together in the same parliamentary group. A fusion is likely in the near future. However, the former Communists are unlikely to play a big role in the new party - the party was basically dead, only with Voronin and a few nostalgics and loyalists left, and Voronin is probably too old and senile to lead a big party again. Being back in Parliament may be enough to satisfy him as he nears the end.

Today, the Moldovan Parliament has elected its Speaker - PAS leader Igor Grosu will serve in that capacity for the next four years. It is somewhat surprising that the leader of the party who won the election will not be Prime Minister, but it would seem as if President Sandu wanted her long-time protege Natalia Gavrilita, who used to be her Chief of Staff during her tenure as Minister, to lead the Government. Regardless, neither Grosu nor Gavrilita have any political popularity and are clearly stand-ins for Sandu. Whether or not PAS will manage to stop being a party solely dragged along by its de facto leader is an open question that needs to be answered during its government.

Wasn’t there a law preventing the president party from holding the prime minister spot?

So, as anticipated, Gavrilita is the new Prime Minister nominee and will release her Cabinet list soon. As mentioned, Gavrilita is President Sandu's protege and former Chief of Staff so she is unlikely to do anything independently, but she is overall qualified for the job, especially compared to her predecessors. It will be interesting to see who her Ministers will be and how much will PAS stick by its competence criterias

So the list of Ministers has been published and it actually looks decent. Most proposals have some connection to the area they are supposed to preside over and none with obvious skeletons in the closet. Definetely the most mob-free government in the recent history of Moldova. What is more concerning is that fact that the ever more opportunistic Sor Party seems to try and align itself to the new government, and it might be tempting for PAS to take them in as "constructive opposition" (what parties technically in opposition but allied to the government are called in Moldova) as their votes would provide a majority able to modify the Constitution.

I think it is due time for an update. The honeymoon enjoyed by PAS until the last few weeks is over and now they are going to have to deal with the first crisis of their governance - after Gazprom, on which Moldova was reliant, decided to cut it off, the country had to go into an emergency state as the lack of gas is threatening to make Moldovans freeze in their homes during the cold season. There are no easy solutions, given that rebuilding an entire sector of the economy takes time, but they are going to have to find gas somewhere. The government is already having discussions with countries such as Ukraine and Romania. The declaration of an emergency state is also threatening to postpone the snap election in the Russophone city of Balti, the second largest in the country, which has not had a mayor since Renato Usatii resigned in July. Also, the General Prosecutor, who was a collaborator of exiled oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc, got arrested earlier this month for corruption, and socialists are already complaining about Sandu autocracy and other such things.

1 year has passed since PAS came into power, and the people of Moldova are certainly not seeing the kind of improvements in their life that they were hoping for. It would have been difficult for it to happen, given the proximity of Moldova to the war in Ukraine and its economical reliance on both Ukraine and Russia. Still, the level of inflation has risen to over 30%, in numbers not seen since 1999. It is worth noting that the economical problems from 1999-2000 were the main reason for which Voronin came to power. Luckily, the election is still 3 years away and PAS has such a strong majority in the Parliament that it is very unlikely for early elections to take place. Still, if elections were to happen, it is likely that the main stooge of Russia in Moldova, Igor Dodon, would come back to power with fugitive oligarch Ilan Sor, whose party has experienced a popularity boost, by his side, and throw the country into the arms of Mother Russia. So one could say that the stakes are higher than ever for this small country caught in the middle of decade-long geopolitical warfare.
