Anyone else watch the DOJ/FBI briefing earlier? High energy, massive FF comments from the Acting US Attorney. Basically, they are expecting hundreds of criminal charges, and many of the people arrested for trespassing or other misdemeanors can expect felony charges to come.

So Senate conviction requires 17 Republicans. Is that possible?

Obvious ones:
Romney
Collins
Murkowski
Sasse
Toomey

I guess you could compile another 12 from old dinosaurs who probably won't run again...but are there enough?

McConnell
Grassley
Shelby
Inhofe
Risch
Blunt

Now we're to people younger than Chuck Schumer...and at 11. I guess Burr has said he's not running again so that's 12.

For what is worth, if a significant amount of Republicans go for impeaching Trump, they better make sure they get him convicted

The worst scenario as an R officeholder is voting for conviction, ending up something like 55-45 and then Trump supports a  crazy primary challenger to you. That would still happen if convicted but it would with Trump found guilty the votes aren't there for you to lose your primary to the crazies on treason

If you aim for the king, you better not miss

I find it extremely unlikely McConnell will actively lobby Senators to vote for conviction.

They'll do vote counting before. If they just can't get the votes then no one is going to vote to convict then no one will vote to convict aside from the first batch, (possibly not even Sasse then.)

Rachel Maddow (so obviously not an unbiased source) suggested there might be some Republicans who can't bring themselves to vote to convict, but might just not show up to vote and thereby bring the threshold for conviction down. No idea if that was based in any actual reports or just her speculation, though.

If this isn’t white privilege, then I don’t know what is:

That's not white privilege, that's just what happens in prisons, and I don't even see how that's a bad thing, as long as anyone is allowed to request such a meal for religious reasons regardless of race.

I'm pretty sure that even prisoners on death row can request anything at all for their last meal.

Even if constitutionally-protected, the request for an all shamanistic diet is nevertheless cringe-worthy.

Agreed lol

It would be greatly satisfying for me if say one of the unexpected Ayes were to stand up and tell Josh Hawley or Tuberville, "God Damn it I vote yes, YOU SHOOT ME DEAD, I VOTE YES!!!".

"Strict shaman diet" is only a thing if you’re, you know, an actual shaman. Roll Eyes

I suppose prisons should start feeding Jewish inmates shellfish and Muslim inmates pork then? You know, to not play favorites.

Whichever judge ordered this, they had an absolutely, completely justified decision.

I can't believe it's come to this. This is something you see in Turkey or Zimbabwe.

Maybe not but what could happen is enough show up to convict for a quorum, but most of the rest of the Republicans stay home so they can wash their hands of it. Can still be convicted with 2/3 of “those present” according to Constitution.

Assuming no Republicans vote for it (not gonna happen but provides an upper bound) and Warnock and Ossoff aren’t sworn in, 28 senators would need to not show up.

27.  Perdue's already out of the Senate since his term ended on Jan. 3.

This makes it surprisingly easy then for impeachment to happen. All you need is 67 senators present and 2/3rds present in favor.

If Trump somehow gets convicted, it'll definitely be sliding scale math.

I'm now willing to go on a limb and predict Trump being given a conviction by the Senate.
