In 2016, this same exercise was used to show how arbitrary and silly the Electoral College is: moving 3 counties to neighboring states flipped the Electoral College in favor of Hillary Clinton. These three counties (York, PA to MD; Lake, IL to WI; Monroe, MI to OH) had a combined population of 1,291,155 in 2010.

This year, the same dynamic played out: 3 counties swapped would have handed the election to Trump - with an even smaller 2010 combined population (820,382):

  • Muscogee, GA (189,885) to AL
  • Delaware, PA (558,979) to DE
  • Apache, AZ (71,518) to NM

You can actually flip all 50 states blue in 2020 by rearranging counties in that app. It's pretty crazy how the EC works

Moving Cook County to Indiana flips Indiana to Biden and makes Illinois a very narrow Trump victory.

I gave Lucas, OH to MI and Lake, IL to WI and and New Castle, DE to PA in 2016 to give Hillary the EC win. Hillary would have to lose Delaware to win Pennsylvania.

Changing the state of 15 counties (I'm sure you could do it with less) would have won Romney the election.

Basically...

VA: Fairfax County, Fairfax City, Arlington, Alexandria, and Falls Church to Maryland (only Fairfax and Arlington would flip it, but I wanted to keep it geographically consistent

IL: Move Cook and Lake to Wisconsin. You could move Cook to Indiana and make Illinois red, but then Indiana becomes blue. Wisconsin, which is already an Obama state, would only get bluer.

OR: Move Multnomah and Washington to WA, and Oregon is red

MI: Give Wayne, Washtenaw, Macomb, and Monroe to Ohio. I'm surprised it took four whole counties to flip Michigan, but then again Obama won it by nearly 10 points

NV: Move Clark to California or Arizona, Romney wins Nevada. It's crazy how influential Clark County is, it would be a solid R state without Clark. The GOP candidate would have won it by 17 in 2004, 1 in 2008, 10 in 2012, 16 in 2016, and 13 in 2020.

I just made an extremely gerrymandered map that gives Biden 538 electoral votes.

I gave Camden NJ to PA. DE would be a pointless state without New Castle unless you give it all of eastern MD.

You arrive late to the game. Check out my posts in the following thread: https://talkelections.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=374908.0

Also, as gets noted there, you just need 2 counties to flip 2016: Lucas County from OH to MI and Mercer County from NJ to PA.
Actually, if you want to be a total hack, you can flip 2016 with only one county: Los Angeles County from CA to TX. Lmao
