Despite the raging sex scandal, New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey does not resign and runs for renomination and reelection.

U.S. Atty. Chris Christie resigns his position and wins the 2005 GOP nomination.

Who wins?

The whole reality is that if Bush never won the presidency, Chris Christie would have just been a affluent suburban lawyer from New Jersey.

Chris Christie 51%
Gov. Jim McGreevey 49% (Inc.)

Christie wins by 2 points---Christie Whitman barely beat a unpopular Gov. Jim Florio, Chris Christie would have a hard time beating a unpopular and scandal plagued Gov. Jim McGreevey.

Because of the scandal, if McGreevey ran for reelection, pretty much any Republican nominee would beat him, some by more than others.

Chris Christie (R) 57%
Jim McGreevey (D) 42%

Would McGreevey lose his own home county, Middlesex?

Would Christie use homophobia against McGreevey to appeal to social conservatives in South Jersey and Northwestern Jersey?
