That's weird, hasn't Chip Roy generally been opposing the effort to challenge the election?

Yes.  Perhaps this is a way to highlight the hypocrisy of any representatives from those states objecting to Biden's election?
Yeah, that was the point he was making. If the presidential votes in those states were messed up, then clearly we shouldn't be seating any of the House members either. So now all the Republicans have been forced to go on record on this.

Now that the freshmen have been sworn in, they've moved into their offices. https://clerk.house.gov/member_info/TTD-117.pdf

Cori Bush and Marjorie Taylor Greene are right by each other. I couldn't make this up if I tried.

All the talk about defectors, it didn't matter, Pelosi still was elected Speaker anyways, Connor Lamb should have voted for Pelosi

Pelosi's final term as Speaker.

Dems should look at Hakeem Jeffries or Cheri Bustos in the future.

It'll be Jeffries.

I think Lamb's vote for him, given that they're not very similar ideologically or in terms of personal background, was meant partly to suggest that, yes. He's youngish by House leadership standards, from an ultra-safe seat (like Pelosi and unlike Bustos), and would be the first non-white House party leader (almost said "Congressional party leader" before remembering Charles Curtis) in a Democratic Party to which firsts like that are increasingly important. For all these reasons, he's definitely the favorite.

I would agree.

Unfortunately, Jeffries is also the lesser evil keeping AOC et al in Pelosi's corner. While she may be more covertly against the left, Jeffries is extremely overtly anti-left - to the point where he abused official communications accounts to rebuke AOC's staff.

His election to Speaker would signal my point of no return with the Democratic Party. It would represent a departure from Biden's ideas of unity and giving the left a seat at the table, and a return to the Clinton-esque idea that the left is a significant drag on the party and must be rooted out of the party. And if the Democratic caucus believes I'm a drag in the party, I'm perfectly happy to show them how wrong they are.

The Authoritarian vs Federalist Republican split that Trump is forcing on the party right now is not a clear cut line between those brought in by the Trump admin and those from before it. If anything, it's a split between those who were introduced to politics in the dixicratic, and later Blue Dog, school of using politics to preserve Power, and those that were trained in areas more familiar with ideological competition.

It's wild that Chip Roy and Mike Lee oppose the EC certification challenge while Mike Garcia and Elise Stefanik support it.

Seems like the dividing line is states where changing election law on (near) party line votes is common vs. states where it is not?

Is it normal for this part of the opening process to be party-line?

The previous question is ordered, on a party line vote of 217-204.

The question is now on the motion to commit with respect to H. Res. 8.

What is the first real legislation the House and Senate will consider (or the committees I guess it should be said)?

So procedure question. Republican congressman puts forth a motion to postpone consideration of the Rules package. Hoyer makes a motion to table the motion to postpone consideration. Tabling in the American context means to suspend indefinitely. Why don't they just have a vote and vote it down since the Democrats have the votes. What's the difference between defeating the motion and tabling the motion since both require a vote and the postponement motion becomes moot anyway once the rules package resolution has passed?
