Couldn’t find a thread for it! South Pacific as low profile as ever.
The election was 10 days ago and after a week of negotiations the nation has reached a pivotal moment in its history, with a coalition formed to oust 15 year coup leader turned elected Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama (Mahna Mahna do do do do do).
He has been replaced by… another coup leader! Though Sitiveni Rabuka did it not once but twice in 1987, then served as Prime Minister for 7 years in the 90s. He returns leading a coalition of his new People’s Alliance (PA), the National Federation Party (NFP) and the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA). The new Speaker is PA’s Ratu Naiqama, his Deputy is NFP’s Lenora Qereqeretabua.
Trying to figure out the ideological differences between the two sides is clear as mud, as is typical for the region. There doesn’t seem to be a clear divide between Indo-Fijians and Indigenous Fijians either, as has wracked past elections.
