I'm not enough of an exclusivist to be confident it would be an improvement.

Very strange, I'd think — my religious views are the product of the particular climate of US society (especially white Southern society) and probably would not make much sense if suddenly imposed on, I don't know, Indonesia.

Main impact would be a massive revenue boom for whatever print shop publishes the Book of Common Prayer.

Depends what you mean by "the norm". I'd absolutely, positively hate living in a world where everyone was a hard-agnostic with vague metaphysical inclinations, since that would mean there is no actually-defined metaphysical viewpoints to fulfill these inclinations. We'd all be miserable together. Tongue

If you mean it being "the norm" more in the sense of a social convention people of different faiths land on as a sort of common language while continuing to believe what they believe and practice what they practice, I think it's pretty ideal (if I do say so myself). And I think it should be the spirit with which the state should approach religious issues as well.

I want to think that the world would better if everyone were an atheist or secular humanist, but my knowledge of history suggests that the world would be very different but no better off overall. In my opinion, the positives would be no sectarian violence, less homophobia and transphobia, and more public trust in science. Everything else would be just as bad if not even worse for unforeseen reasons.

The world would be much better if everyone were born again, evangelical Christians.  But, the world would not be perfect because we are all sinners at the end of the day.

Eh, instead of fighting over religion, people would be fighting over the name of their science like in that South Park episode or something

I'm SO biased, obviously, but of course I think it would be better!  Then again, I don't want everyone to share my spiritual VIEWS but rather the general temperament of more liberal Mainline Protestantism.  What I mean by that is that I find a lot of the divisive rhetoric of many Evangelical circles (i.e., defining who's a "real Christian" and, IMO, spitting on the tradition of free thinking among Christian scholars and demanding far too dogmatic views of the Bible) to be incredibly damaging to Christianity, making many younger people feel that if they aren't on board with more conservative denominations of Christianity, they are simply more at home being "Unaffiliated."  Without passing judgment on whether being "Christian" or "Unaffiliated" is better or worse, I DO believe the decline in "moderate Christianity" in favor of secularism or conservative Christianity has had a damaging effect on cultural discourse.  Having a Catholic Democrat argue with a Lutheran Republican or whatever just simply seemed to yield a lot more productivity than a Baptist Republican arguing with an Agnostic Democrat.

That's just a bizarre thought in general lol.

Still better. No ISIS or other terrorists, or things like Hindutva or all the negative things from conservative Christianity. Also no neckbeard atheists or murderous communists.

Can't really say it would be much different. Well maybe it would cause we'd all be a little more chill and less inclined to murder or go to war because of religious differences but also I don't fully know what my religious and spiritual views even are so there would be a lot of confusion.

It’d be a lot more tolerant and secular. People would still have religious beliefs but the idea of praying before a sports game in the USA would be unthinkable.

Everyone would have some organized spiritual beliefs, and would be at least mildly practicing. People would be happy to talk about them, as they would for a hobby or for sports teams. There would be some Benedict-option isolationists, but they're generally seen as eccentrics. There would be no fundamentalists. People are simultaneously respectful of religious beliefs and willing to debate them, but religious institutions are fair game. For instance, it would be taboo to ridicule Catholic beliefs about Mary, but the Internet would be flooded with memes about Catholic clergy just as it is with memes about politicians.

Very secular, tolerant, and far less sexually charged
