Not sure where to put this thread. Didn't want to put it in Off-Topic given its topics are usually of a much different nature than discussing literature but neither did I wish to put it in Individual Politics because I'm not evaluating Borges's politics primarily.

An excellent, imaginative writer.

He's probably my favorite writer of short stories. "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius" was without a doubt my favorite story in high school and I have fond memories of trying to explain the structure of the language Borges presents in the book, namely the one without nouns, and we all took turns attempting to muster our best pronunciation of "hlör u fang axaxaxas mlö."

Even now I would say he is one of my favorite short story authors, and he probably is still my favorite. I suppose now though I would say there are other stories of greater substance than the ones I liked in high school. I think all his stories have some substance, of course, but something like "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius" is perhaps of less significance in a literary sense then say "Funes the Memorious" (which was never my favorite, but talking to others seems to be well regarded). Just looking through the table of contents now though, I can't really pinpoint any single story in Ficciones that I really didn't like (maybe "The South," but it was still an okay one). I own his collected fictions and periodically return to them and recommend stories to friends.

One of the best writers I have never read anything by, I think.

Not that I'm exactly a very avid reader (if not at random bursts). Sadly I seem not to have inherited that trait of my mother.

Freedom writer. I’m a big fan of The Garden of Forking Paths. Death and the Compass is second.

I have his collected fictions, but I haven’t really been able to get into it beyond those two (very good) short stories.

Excellent and imaginative author, as well as a very singular and eccentric personality.  His works are exceedingly clever and erudite excercises that I enjoyed sometimes, but occasionally they left me a bit cold
