So is it sighs or tears??? Do we have 61?

At least one Israeli news channel has "called" the election for more deadlock. Looks like the surplus vote agreements weren't quite enough for Bibi.

The generally pro-Bibi Jerusalem Post confirms no Bibi majority.

Alright, alright, good. Worst case avoided. Now, what happens? Presumably an election in August, but who will be Prime Minister until then?

Bibi stays caretaker PM until either someone else successfully forms a government or the anti bloc+Ra'am rams through a law disqualifying (and thus deposing) him. However, if this is still the situation in November (an astounding but real possibility), Gantz automatically becomes PM under the previous rotation agreement. Yes, seriously.

Likud 25.5%
YA 13.8%
Yamemena 9.4%
Labour 8.1%
YB 6.6%
Kahanists 6.4%
KL 6.3%
Shas 5.7%
New Joke 5.2%
Meretz 4.8%
UTJ 3.26%
JL 2.6%
Ra'am 1.6%
Zalicha 0.9%
Antivax kooks 0.3%

On policy grounds it would be easier to form a center-right goverment without Netenyahu. The past 4 elections have clearly shown that there is a solid center-right majority but Netenyahu's himself prevents a stable center-right goverment.

Yes, the median Israeli voter pretty obviously wants a right-liberal government without the Kahanists but maybe with the Haredim. It's just Bibi's personality that prevents this.

I like my online fora without violent bigots or suicide-baiting keyboard warriors (sane, apparently abnormal).

Ra'am froze talks because of an escalation with Hamas after some sort of clash at the Al-Aqsa Mosque the other day.

Indeed, Biden did his part. Is it the first time Bibi uses the *right of Israel to defend itself* within the *escalation of the conflict* to his advantage?

I hope nobody is surprised to discover that Bibi is the smartest beast in that pack of hyenas. Otherwise wake up, folks. Don't pretend Israel is a democracy and you are discussing coalition formation in Belgium or the Netherlands

Israel would be a democracy if the non-Bibi politicians there were capable of making decisions. It's not Belgium or the Netherlands, but it's not Hungary or Turkey either.

So, Lapid's mandate expires at midnight in Israel, right? That's less than six hours away as I am typing this...is there any worry that they are not going to have a deal set in stone by that time?
Yes.

I think the right will come around, but Ra'am might end up hesitating. It's crunch time

What a roller coaster.

With Israeli politics, who needs the CW?

My source ftr was the Jerusalem Post, which I've been refreshing all day. (At work, which is why I wasn't posting much about it.)

Glad he’s going, for sure, but Bennett doesn’t give me a ton of hope.

My sentiments exactly. Bennett probably won't be much better, but at least he isn't blatantly corrupt...as far as we know.

Harold Wilson with his Labour Right-dominated Cabinet was known to joke that he was a Bolshevik leading a government of Tsarists. Bennett is going to be the reverse, up to eleven and bass-boosted.

Don't forget Shaked

I didn't get the Yesh Atid one until I saw what Yir Lapid looks like.

Lapid has the kavorka.

In terms of how their communities are governed, i disagree.
How is an internal communal form of organisation directly relevant to political philosophy? The Druze then are hyper theocratic
How is it not relevant to Shas and (especially) UTJ?
Neither has an ambition to create a theocratic state, their internal constitution is besides the point

I wouldn’t put forming a theocratic authoritarian state past the Religious Zionism Party if they ever got half a chance.  Bezalel Smotrich is one of the worst apples in Bibi’s basket of deplorables.

I think what Hnv1 is saying is that Shas and UTJ aren't really interested in Israel itself being a theocracy, just in being allowed to run their own communities in a theocratic way. My understanding is that that's exactly what distinguishes them from the national religious.

Would be hilarious if the entire Bibi bloc got ejected and the confidence vote passed like 60-6-1.

Corrected.

Ta'al and Odeh ended up voting against after they saw Al-Haroumi (Ra'am) abstained

Are you sure it's because of that and not because they saw that none of the Joint List needed to abstain in order to get rid of Netanyahu?

That's exactly what it means; once they saw the Ra'am guy would be making himself scarce rather than voting against (and thus that unified JL opposition would make it a 60-59 vote rather than 60-60), they came back and voted against with a clear conscience.
