The New Joke reps said that Rivlin should invite Bennet and Lapid to a meeting, he said that'd be a political intervention. That's what happens when the politicians aren't acting with strategy because they want to keep their hands clean and expect the apolitical President to do it for them

Well this is a pickle. Lapid went on live air telling Bennett he agrees to a rotation where he’s second in order. Bennett has 24 hours to decide his future. If they don’t agree until Thursday I think Rivlin will grudgingly give it to Bibi and that’s 5th elections.

Rivlin declined New Hope's proposal that he broker a power-sharing agreement between Yesh Atid and Yamina chiefs, Yair Lapid and Naftali Bennett, calling such a move “political intervention.”

He should take note from Herzog who had Peres and Shamir in for 10 hours until they agreed on a government. Navon who threatened to resign if the Sabre and Shatila massacre wouldn’t be investigated. And Shazar who pushed for Ben Gurion to be ousted behind the scenes.

The president is a political figure with a constitutional role. Grow up Rivlin

Today the new Knesset is getting sworn in. It certainly has bright spots- two liberal Arab women sworn in from Zionist parties and Gilad Kariv will become the first non-Orthodox Rabbie to be MK. There will also be historically high LGBTQ representation, though unfortunately it's only gay men- 5 MKs, I believe.

But it's also a low- Itamar Ben Gvir will be sworn in as the first Kahanist representative since Michael Ben Ari in 2009. And this time he's in the mainstream.

Bennett just ended his PM aspirations. You don’t say no when you have the opportunity or you’ll never get it again. He can ask Sylvan Shalom, Ezer Weitzman, Pinhas Sapir and others who waited.

Anyhow Sa’ar certainly erred. But the blame here is on Rivlin. I never liked him, but the past two years showed what an incompetent and worthless politician he is. His position is 99.5% ceremonial, but at the 0.5% where his head of state role is the pure sovereign politics he failed totally.

Yes...and also no. The Religious Zionists have made countless statements about not joining a govt with the support of Ra'am, and somewhat vice versa. Realistically Yamina has also issues joining a govt with support of the arabs though.

So in the end, I still don't see how Bibi getting the mandate changes things drastically. Likud will always have the coercive carrots and sticks until a non-Likud govt is inaugurated, and that does not matter who gets the mandate. The Arabs and the National religious are irreconcilable, and it is in Sa'ar's best interest to continue to oppose Bibi, unless Bibi already has 61 votes and is in the process of forming a govt.

The Labor Party wants to pass a law to prevent criminal defendants from running or serving as president, to block Netanyahu from using this escape route if he can't form a government.

I think Netanyahu isn't capable of winning a majority for him and his allies. Not until the electorate gets so bored they stop voting and low turnout gets the right a victory
