It's too soon to say for sure, as we haven't yet seen the lasting damage of all of his actions. In terms of the immediate damage, definitely downplaying the health risks of COVID.

I steal this joke all the time, but it's never been truer-- it's like trying to choose you're favorite Michael Bolton song.

Climate change and Paris Accords, Wildfires and Hurricanes and Pandemics had a direct correlation to Green House effect, along with INHOLFE, the Rs said there was no such thing and yes there was

Top 5:

1. Allegedly calling fallen soldiers "suckers" and "losers"
2. His current assault on American democracy and society after the election
3. The (non-)handling of the Jamal Khashoggi murder
4. Betraying the Kurds
5. Blackmailing Ukraine to dig up dirt on his political opponent

These, to my mind, are the most damaging to America. I can handle hypocrisy, corruption, insensitivity, and even borderline treason, but these were real gut punches for me.

Nice, I'd forgotten about this one. That was probably in the top five.

I think I have some recency bias here, so this may change as we move farther from 2020, but here's my current ranking:

1. No strategy to fight COVID, willful ignorance in the early days of the pandemic, thinking and telling supporters that it'll all just miraculously go away.

2. Encouraging and strengthening far-right gangs and then playing dumb when called out for it.

3. Continuing and worsening the US's barbaric treatment of asylum seekers.

4. Destroying US legitimacy with our allies and partners abroad and weakening our levers on influence around the world for the second time in two decades.

5. Encouraging violence against the media and other critics.

6. The original travel ban and associated chaos.

Maybe instead we should congratulate him on the things he did do well and thank him as he goes out the door for the final time.

A little honey goes a long way. It's something Trump never learned, but maybe we can walk our talk and teach him how to do it.

Focusing on all those negatives in the list makes my head spin. We have already lived through them...why continue dwelling on them.

Just a thought.

I had a really hard time choosing between (1) undermining democracy, (2) failing to impose a nationwide COVID response and (3) blowing up the Paris Climate Accord.

All of the above. However, specifically, I expect his legacy, at its most general and simplified, to mostly end up being focused on a combination of his corruption, his COVID-19 response, his enabling of reactionaries, and his behavior/temperament and how they led to our norms and institutions weakening. Though there is overlap among all four of those.

For me, at least:

1. ending the Iran Nuclear Deal, and actually his whole policy towards Iran. I am so tired of our aggressive foreign policy towards them.

2. the 2017 tax law, which didn't just cut taxes for the wealthy, it straight-up redistributes wealth upwards via changing the way inflation is calculated in the income tax tables, so that by 2025, a majority of people making less than $75,000 per year will see a real tax increase, while a majority of those above will see a real tax cut. So much for being the "anti-elite, working class" party.

3. trying to undermine the ACA and strip millions of people of their healthcare

4. literally everything related to immigration, refugees, and asylum-seekers

I believe that the worst and most damaging thing in the end is going to be the climate change denialism.

However the poll question asked for the *most offensive* which I interpret in a very personal-morals way and for which there are many good candidates. I am going to mention resuming federal executions - and overseeing so many in his last six months -  as it is probably the most clear-cut, and it's not included in the poll (yet).

You know how media critics will write a "best of" list in mid December, and then a lot of December releases are left out?

This feels similar. It's still to early to say what the worst thing Trump did was.

I would say pardoning 4 guys who killed 14 people in Iraq for no reason deserves at least an "honorable mention."

It's a big and pretty comprehensive list, but I think it's missing:

* defending Russia while it launches comprehensive cyberattacks against our government

Definitely his coronavirus response. Not that there was a shortage of other politicians sucking hard on that issue.

1. Downplaying the effectiveness of precautions against Coronavirus (I feel like this must have killed the most people)
2. Downplaying the health risks posed by the Coronavirus (close second)
3. Encouraging his supporters to make assassination attempts on Hillary Clinton's life (not his most effective or damaging offense, but so very heinous that it is a stain on our nation's history)
4. Making family separation at the border a concrete policy (kids in cages...)
5. Publicly encouraging the white supremacists in Charlottesville
6. Attempting to invalidate legitimate ballots
7. Refusing to concede the election and treasonously undermining American democracy
8. Refusing to enact nationwide preventative measures against the Coronavirus (nationwide measures would have helped, but are not necessarily needed if he doesn't lead state-level Republicans down to the "hoax" fantasy land)
9. Refusing pay attention to intelligence briefings (aka refusing do his own job)
10. Soliciting a foreign power to dig up dirt on his political opponent (and using government money to do so)

I don't think anyone's mentioned his loosening of the rules of engagement which has led to a tripling of civilian casualties where the U.S. is involved in bombing since February 2017

He also solicited election help/interference from China in the 2020 election by directly asking them to buy more American agricultural products in order to give him a  talking point for reelection. I don't know if you want to fold this in with #1 on your list, but just another thing that got memory holed since impeachment.

I have to say that I am awed by the ability to look at a list this damning and not feel even a twinge of humility or shame.

Trump is constantly chest thumping about how much he loves America, but he colluded with a hostile foreign power to rig the 2016 election in his favor, I can't think of anything more treasonous then that.
