LBJ used taxpayer money to spy on Barry Goldwater in 1964.

That just proves my age old point regarding such matters. Everyone, of every ideology, from every party...has used your money to spy on the other guy. The difference? When Republicans do it, it's corruption. When Democrats do it, it's redemption.

While we're on that time period, Nixon did sabotage the peace talks right before the 1968 election, and that actually made the difference in that election.

Yeah, let's vote Republican now because Democrats may have been corrupt 42 years ago. Who cares that the Republicans were corrupt then and now?

That's a very good point, about the sabotage of the peace talks, and a little known fact about that campaign in 1968. I would think that deliberately interfering with US foreign policy during a war in this way could be seen as treasonous.

Johnson knew about this and wanted Humphrey to use it in his campaign, but Humphrey thought it would be too dirty and wanted the election to be decided on the issues.
