What kind of maps involve candidates winning very little land area despite winning overall?

MO-PRES 2008, almost.

Also, a flip of the usual partisanship for such a map: GA-SEN 1980.

Not just the GE, but the Democratic primary as well:

https://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/state.php?fips=29&f=1&year=2008&elect=1

In general, I'd think that Democratic primaries would be especially prone to this kind of behavior, since the population of voters is even more concentrated in urban areas in Democratic primaries than it is in a general election.

WA-SEN 2000

AK in the last three presidential elections is probably the best answer as far as Republican wins go.

LOL. That almost looks like a generic general election map.
Does anybody know if Obama has some relatives living in Nowaday County? Wink

Delaware is an interesting contender for this topic.
In a three-way race, a candidate can win statewide without winning any of its three counties.

There are some quite extreme foreign examples. Case in point: Amazonas in Brazil 2018. Bolsonaro won only Manaus and two other municipalities, which have a total of 5% of area, but because Manaus, a majority of the population of the state, went to Bolsonaro by a wide margin, Bolsonaro won.

Trumps 15 point victory in Alaska 2016, ironic that republicans never color in Alaska counties in their "Impeach this Map" nor show the map to scale.

Assuming Nodaway is the green county in the northwest, there's a small university there.  (Once upon a time, it was Northwest Missouri State, but the name may have changed.  I'm too lazy to look it up.)

It's interesting IMO that Adair didn't flip, if that's why Nodaway flipped.

It's crazy how the 2008 and 2016 primaries basically delivered the same results, although in one case both candidates won almost the same number of counties, whereas in the other case landmass didn't vote. Wink

Illinois in the 1960 presidential election, Kennedy took the state by 0.18%, though there were some allegations of voter fraud in Chicago from Mayor Daley's political machine.
