I would support this now that there is certainty about the apportionment.

How would yalls recommend making the new EC votes available?

I was thinking of a "2020 (post-census)" option that shows the 2020 results with the new numbers. I could then phase that menu option out once the 2024 presidential election concludes.

Any thoughts?

yalls?  "Y'all" is already plural.

May 2021 update

1. Updated electoral votes for post-2020 apportionment
2. Added custom electoral vote labels (you can now insert custom text where EVs currently go)
3. Added orange party color, bringing the total number of supported candidates/parties to 6
4. Added the 1836 presidential election to preset map list
5. Fixed error where tossup selections were reset if you changed candidate name/party information
6. Tweaked region tooltips to display tossup status, if applicable
7. Tweaked candidate legend alignment to make it easier to read when map scenario has large number of candidates
8. Fixed a bug where the total electoral votes were not always counted correctly for states with a vote-by-district system
9. Fixed a bug where candidate names with an apostrophe could mess up embedded maps on the Preview Post page
10. Fixed a bug where turning off Tossup support would cause existing tossup states to retain gray color
11. Fixed a bug where rating choices in prediction mode were not always properly remembered for states if the independent count or tossup status was changed
12. Tooltips from hovering over states in maps operating in prediction mode now show the prediction rating. Candidate total tips also now show rating totals
13. Updated Mississippi state flag
14. Adjusted electoral vote placement for MI, IL, IN, OH, NY, VA, NC and GA to make the labels more centered and aesthetically pleasing
15. Fixed clipping issue on SC electoral vote label
16. Fixed a bug where winner columns were sometimes missing if the independent count was less than the # of distinct candidates who won at least one state
17. Fixed a bug where clicking on a state in prediction mode would sometimes change the state's color to black (instead of changing the rating)
18. Fixed a bug where maps made with no popular vote shading were missing internal popular vote data
19. Fixed a few other minor bugs

Wrong flags in the following states:

Texas
South Carolina
Mississippi (still using previous flag)
Montana
North Carolina
New Mexico
West Virginia
Pennsylvania (has the Puerto Rican flag for some reason)
New York
Wyoming (has no flag whatsoever)
Ohio
Oklahoma
Washington
New Jersey
Rhode Island
Vermont
Wisconsin
Tennessee
New Hampshire
Nevada
South Dakota
North Dakota

and maybe some others I didn't notice. Feel free to add onto that if I missed any.

^^ Also seeing this. It looks like roughly half the states got mismatched flags (in hilarious ways for a few of these) and MS never changed. (wouldn't be the first time! Tongue)

Everything else works fine for me so far, though.

Is it practical to go below 30% for popular vote shading? I was thinking about that today but I'm unsure how to do it. There really isn't any room to move at the current shading.

This is 30% Purple: Candidate name

This is the next logical step down: Candidate name

I think the only way to go below 30%'s current shading is to shift all popular vote shades up, making everything darker, which might throw off people's perceptions of the maps and give them the wrong impression as at least some are probably used to certain shades by now.

I don’t think <30% shading is necessary. The current shades are good and dark enough. If you were to add 20% then the super light color could work since it’s not like there will be text written in that color.

The only way 20% would even be possible would be in a at least a four-way contest, and we've never really had one at the presidential level in a general election. 1860 came closest, but that was a bunch of two- or three-way contests in various States.

Thanks. That appears to have been an old bug, too. I wish I had noticed it sooner. Maps generated with "no popular vote shading" option all had 0 for the pop vote shade value, which wasn't supposed to be. It doesn't really mess anything else up but it also means those particular maps can't be toggled back to using pop. vote shades, since the original values do not exist in the map BBCode data.

I've fixed it for future maps.

I'm late, but these updates are amazing, and even more amazing to me is that there was actual news in the "News" banner!

Also, getting Maine's borders right pre-Webster–Ashburton! Cheesy

Yeah, I added it there because I wanted people to know it was updated so they could report any issues with it, which worked out in the end. I don't really have the time to be extremely thorough with this and even then I still miss things, so I partially rely on others to point out problems.

Also, getting Maine's borders right pre-Webster–Ashburton! Cheesy

Once I implement faithless elector support, which as a side effect will enable me to handle proportionally allocated EVs, I'll add the rest of the elections prior to 1836. I wanted to add them all for this update but electoral vote winners wasn't as cut and dry back then as it is today, and the map generator wasn't designed to handle those scenarios. It's easy to see why Dave never did those elections for his calculator either.

I'd like to include the disputed regions in Louisiana for 1812 & 1816, although might need to do some research on the exact issue there to make sure it's necessary.

Great update!

One question: is there the possibility to add custom electoral votes in the future (not winner-takes-it-all but manual or proportional EV attribution) to make the maps more usable for primary elections/predictions or for future / alt-history elections with proportional electoral votes? That's the only feature i think that I would absolutely love!

I had actually started work on that for this update but eventually realized it was a lot more work than I had anticipated, so I have pushed it back to the next major update. In other words, it'll be added at some point.
