I loved these books when I was a kid, but I had kind of forgotten about them until yesterday, when I found them laying around the house and picked up a couple to read. I was surprised by how much I still enjoyed them, and there were many things I noticed that I wouldn't have picked up on as a kid. My new favorite is probably King Ottokar's Sceptre; Syldavia and Borduria are such perfect parodies of Balkan nations and I loved the scene where Tintin is reading the travel brochure with all the usual mythologizing, like the "battle against the Turk" and the "great King who freed his nation from foreign oppression" and so forth.

So if it wasn't already obvious, massive Freedom Series. Even though I'm more of an early modern history person, this series has successfully made me nostalgic for mid-20th century Europe.

I learned geography, cursing, and racism from those books. Freedom Series.

Good artwork, but the early stories are exceptionally cringeworthy. I'd recommend starting with Cigars of the Pharaohs and ignoring Hergé's first three storylines.

I'd go with Blue Lotus to start.
