2018 Midterm Primaries

Primary elections took place in the spring and summer of 2018 in Senate, Governor, and House elections. President Sanders declined to endorse progressives candidate and decided to state neutral. This angered many progressives in the Democratic and a large portion of the President's staunch supporters, who believe the Bernie's endorsement could have swayed voters in key races.

Senate:
In Arizona, the Republican Primary was very contentious where Incumbent Republican Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) is running for re-election. He was premiered by a few candidates including ultra-conservative former state senator Kelli Ward, who was endorsed by many far right personalities including Glenn Beck, Laura Ingraham, and former Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Flake won the primary in an unexpectedly close race by less then 4 points.. On the Democratic side, Representative Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) won in an easy victory against unknown candidates. Flake and Sinema will face of in the general which is supposed to be extremely close.

In Florida, Incumbent Democratic Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) announced his intention to retire in January of 2018. Former Mayor of Miami Beach Philip Levine announced that he would run and won the primary. Levine won the primary fairly easily against his lesser known opponents. Florida Republican Governor Phil Scott announced that he would run in the Senate race and easily beat perennial candidate Rocky De La Fuente. Levine and Scott will face off in the general election in November where Scott is narrowly favored to win.

In Indiana, Incumbent Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly (D-IN) announced that he would run for re-election for a second term after speculation that he was considering retirement. Donnelly won the primary unopposed. The Indiana Republican Primary was very close between Businessman Mike Braun and Indiana Representatives Luke Messer, and Todd Rokita. Businessman Mike Braun (R-IN) beat out his two rivals in a very close primary where he won by just over 6 points. In the general election, Donnelly and Braun will face off where Braun is favored to win in a Republican wave year.

In Montana, Incumbent Democratic Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) announced that he would run for re-election for a third term, and won in the primary unopposed. In the Montana Republican Primary many candidates ran including former Judge Russell Fagg and State Auditor Matt Rosendale. Judge Russell Fagg (R-MT) beat out Rosendale by less then 1000 votes, and will face Tester in the general election which is supposed to be extremely close.

In North Dakota, Incumbent Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) announced her intention to retire in March of 2018, a few months before her state's primary. Former State Senator Mac Schneider (D-ND) announced that he would run in the primary and beat out many lesser known candidates. On the Republican side, North Dakota's at large Representative Kevin Cramer (R-ND) announced that he would run, and won the primary in a landslide virtually unopposed. In the general election, Cramer will face off against Schneider, in an almost certain pickup for the Republicans in their quest to flip the majority back.

In West Virginia, Incumbent Democratic Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) considering retiring after President Sanders was elected in 2016. Manchin decided to run for re-election and announced his intention to do so in December of 2017 and won the primary unopposed. On the Republican side, the primary was extremely close between Attorney General Patrick Morrisey and Representative Evan Jenkins. Representative Evan Jenkins (R-WV) narrowly won the primary and will face off against Manchin in the general election.

Governor:
In Florida, Incumbent Republican Governor Rick Scott (R-FL) is term limited and is running for Senate. In the Florida Republican Primary, the race was very close between many candidates including Representative Ron DeSantis and State Attorney General Pam Bondi. Attorney General Pam Bondi narrowly beat out DeSantis in the Republican Primary. On the Democratic side, the race was competitive between former Representative Gwen Graham, representing moderates and the mayor of Tallahassee Andrew Gillum, representing progressives. Former Representative Gwen Graham (D-FL) won the primary by just over 4 points and will face Bondi in the general election in November.

In Georgia, Incumbent Republican Governor Nathan Deal (R-GA) was term limited and could not run for reelection. In the Georgia Republican Primary, the race was extremely close between Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle and State Secretary of State Brian Kemp. Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle (R-GA) barely beat out Kemp. On the Democratic side, former Minority Leader of the Georgia House of Representatives Stacey Abrams easily won the primary against many candidates. Cagle and Abrams will face off in the general election which is supposed to be very close and might eventually go into a runoff.

In Kansas, Incumbent Republican Governor Sam Brownback was term limited and was forced to retire. The race was focused on by the media due to how unpopular Governor Brownback currently is. On the Republican side, Lieutenant Governor Jeff Colyer (R-KS) beat out many candidates including Secretary of State Kris Kobach. On the Democratic side, State Senator Laura Kelly (D-KS) easily beat out many of her challengers and won the primary easily. Colyer and Kely will face off in the general election.

In New Hampshire, Incumbent Democratic Governor Colin Van Ostern (D-NH) announced that he would run for reelection in New Hampshire, one of two states that has two year terms. Van Ostern won the primary unopposed. On the Republican side, State Representative Frank Edelblut (R-NH) won the Republican primary in a narrow race against many opponents. Van Ostern and Edelblut will face each other in the general election, in a race which is supposed to be very close.

House of Representatives:
In Michigan's 13th Congressional District, Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones beat out Progressive Rashida Tlaib by less then 2000 votes. Jones is almost certain to be elected in November in a safe district.

8/1/2018: Bernie Announces End of All Aid to Saudi Arabia in Yemen, Congress Approves It

President Bernie Sanders has announced that the United States will stop giving Saudi Arabia aid in their war in Yemen and support of the local government there. Saudi Arabia is often considered a sponsor of terrorism in the Middle East, some of which is targeted towards the United States and their allies. In recent years, Saudi Arabia and their role as an American ally has been scrutinized and discussed, especially among Liberals and Progressives. President Sanders has been very critical of their relationship and criticized President Obama's stance when he was President. The Senate voted on a bill that would give Saudi Arabia significantly less resources and aid in their war in Yemen. The vote passed in the Senate with bipartisan support in a 63-37 vote approving the resolution. The bill also passed in the House of Representatives by a vote of 232-203, also approving the resolution. Republican leadership in both the Senate and House opposed the resolution including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI).

Progressive Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) spoke - VOTED YAE:
This bill would be very good and I am glad the Senate and the House has passed it. Our relationship with Saudi Arabia is complex and counterproductive. They are an ally in some areas but also a nation that causes harm in the world. We need to deeply think about our relationship with the Saudis and I am proud of the work the President has done.

Libertarian Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) spoke - VOTED YAE:
Although, I am against President Sanders and disapprove of his Presidency, this bill is good for our nation and I am happy that it passed in both houses of congress. We should not be getting involved in endless wars that are unnecessary like the one we are currently participating in Saudi Arabia. However, the Saudis are an American ally and we need to work with them on key issues going forward.

Conservative Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) spoke - VOTED NAY:
I am against this absolute power grab by the President. This is terrible and would destroy our economy and relationship in the world. We need to stop this and President Sanders' liberal far left agenda.

ooo damn Jenkins was the strongest rep that could have ran against Manchin the D's senate majority is gonna take some big losses lol. Also one thing to keep in mind Sanders said if he became president and a senator opposed any of his important legislation if they were democrats he would announce a primary challenger to them and campaign for the primary challenger and if it was a republican he would hold big national rallies for the democrat running against him. very similar to what Trump did in 2018

8/25/18: Sen. McCain Dead at Age 81, Fmr Sen. Jon Kyl To Fill Seat

Wikimedia Commons

Arizona Senator John McCain (R-AZ) is dead at age 81. McCain died of a deadly form of brain cancer which was diagnosed a little over a year ago. McCain is known for many things but first his legacy as a war hero in Vietnam where he was captured and fortuned for over five years. McCain is also served as a Representative from Arizona for four years, and more recently has served as Arizona's Senior Senator for over thirty years and was the Republican nominee for President in 2008 and lost to then Senator Barack Obama. McCain is also known as a maverick and somebody who often goes against his party and stands alone. He is very independent and often tries to compromise with Democrats on key issues like Gun Control.

Arizona Republican Governor Doug Ducey (R-AZ) announced that he intends to nominate Former Arizona Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ), who served along side McCain for 18 years, 3 full terms in the Senate in the other seat which is currently held by senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) whose Senate seat is up this November. Senator Kyl announced that he will only serve in the Senate until the end of 2018, where he will resign from the Senate, and Gov. Ducey will be forced to nominate someone else. Many candidate are speculated including Representative Martha McSally, John McCain's widow, Cindy, and Kirk Adams, Ducey's currently chief of staff, and others.

10/2/18: Jamal Khashoggi allegedly murdered by the Saudis

Wikimedia Commons

American Journalist Jamal Khashoggi had been killed allegedly by the Saudis. Khashoggi was born in Saudi Arabia and exiled the country in September 2017, just over a year ago. Khashoggi wrote negative and critical things in newspapers about the Saudi government and has been banned by the Saudis on twitter. Khashoggi started to write for the Washington Post and was under "American protection." Khashoggi was in Istanbul, Turkey and entered the Saudi consulate there. He never returned and allegedly was cut up into pieces by Saudi agents and was murdered.

The Senate and the House passed legislation to enact harsh legislation on the Saudis due to their human rights violations. In both houses of congress, the bill had bi-partisan support where every Democrat voted for it, and most Republicans did as well. The bill will also put into place an arms moratorium, which will stop the United States from selling guns or planes to Saudi Arabia going forward. President Sanders also is outraged and has put tough sanctions on the Saudis and their government. It is also expected that there will be a reduction of trade between the Saudis and Americans, which will hurt both nations' economies. Republicans and Conservatives have been very critical of Sanders' response to the Saudis and his sanctions.

Vice President Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) spoke - IN FAVOR
"This act by the Saudis is evil and we can not stand for it. I support these actions by the President and am happy that a bi-partisan supermajority in congress agrees."

Conservative Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) spoke - IN FAVOR
"This act by Saudi Arabia was disgusting and they have to be put in check. They should not be allowed to commit these violations, especially against Americans. I am outraged right now at this act by the Saudis and am happy that the majority of congress agrees."

Conservative Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) spoke - AGAINST
"These sanctions are terrible and will hurt our economy. I am against this act by the President and urge my fellow senators to stand against him and his administration. We obviously are against the Saudis and their act, but this is bad and will hurt us in the end."

2018 Midterms Reaches Final Stretch

Wikimedia Commons

The 2018 Midterm Election Campaign has reached the final stretch in mid October, as the 2018 Midterm is on November 6th, 2018. The Republicans are posed to have a wave election as the Incumbent President's Party is the Democratic Party and the opposition party always does well in Midterm Elections. The Republicans already hold a majority in the House and are likely to gain seats there. The Republicans are also in the narrow minority in the Senate, and are likely to flip that chamber back in next month's election. The Democrats and President Sanders will attempt to hold their losses to a minimum in both chambers of congress. In the Governor Elections, where the majority of governorships take place this election season, the Democrats look like they will at least gain one or two seats there.

Many prominent politicians have been campaigning for various candidates trying to give them a boost. President Sanders (I-VT) has went around the country and has campaigned for many moderate and progressive Democratic candidates. President Sanders went to Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania to campaign for the Democratic incumbents in the Senate in all three races, and campaigned for the Democratic Incumbent Governor in Pennsylvania, and challengers in Michigan and Wisconsin. President Sanders is popular in all three states where he narrowly won in the 2016 Election. President Sanders also went to the sunbelt and campaigned for Democratic candidates in Nevada and Florida, as well as House Democratic candidates. The President spoke about progress that they have been making and areas where they need to improve. Sanders also spoke about Republican and the staunch opposition that they have posed towards his administration in many areas that are important to Americans, including Health Care, Climate Change, and Immigration.

Other prominent Democrats including former President Barack Obama (D-IL), former Vice President Joe Biden (D-DE), and current Vice President Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) also strumped for Democrats. All three are considered moderate in the party and campaigned for various moderate candidates. Biden campaigned for Kyrsten Sinema in Arizona, a moderate Democrat who is running for Senate. Obama campaigned for Democrats around the nation including those dark horse candidate Stacey Abrams, teh Democratic candidate in Georgia's Governor election this fall. Abrams is a rising candidate in the party and Obama gave her a boost in her campaign.

Many potential 2020 Republican Presidential Candidates, also campaigned for Republicans around the country running for office, including Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Colorado Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO), Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Ohio Governor John Kasich (R-OH), among others as well. In particular, Rubio campaigned for his fellow Florida Republican candidates including current Governor Rick Scott who is running for Senate and current Attorney General Pam Bondi who is running for Governor. Rubio also went to Arizona to campaign for Jeff Flake, and Nevada to campaign for incumbent Senator Dean Heller, who is running for re-election in a very tough race. Republicans around the country called President Sanders a radical socialist who is destroying our America and is going to ruin our nation. They discussed his progressive agenda and said that the nation needs to elect Republicans to stop Bernie's agenda, especially in the Senate. One important Republican, Businessman Donald Trump who was the Republican's Presidential Nominee in 2016 did not stump for his fellow Republicans and on twitter actually attacked many of them.

2018 Key Race Results

In the Senate and Governor elections, many results were very close and Democrats did better than expected in many key races. However, Republicans did pickup 4 seats in the chamber but Democrats held their losses to a minimum by winning in Senate races in Montana, Nevada, Ohio, and other states in the Midwest. In Governor elections, Democrats picked up 4 seats in Democratic states and lost in some states were they hoped to win.

Senate:
In the Arizona Senate Race, Incumbent Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) beat out Representative Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) by 1.4%. This race was very close, even more than expected. This race was closer then many other key states including Florida, due to the unpopularity of Jeff Flake and the divide in the Arizona Republican Party, between more traditional Republicans like Flake and far-right conservatives like Kelli Ward.

In the Florida Senate Race, Incumbent Governor Rick Scott (R-FL) beat out Former Mayor of Miami Beach Philip Levine (D-FL) by 1.8%, just over 70,000 votes. This race was fairly close which was expected and was called around 10:00 on election night. Governor, now Senator-Elect Scott will take this seat back from the Democrats, after Senator Nelson has held this seat for 18 years.

In the Montana Senate Race, Incumbent Democratic Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) beat out Judge Russell Fagg (R-MT), by less then 0.1%, about 400 votes. Tester did not declare victory for days after the election until all voting officially ended. Fagg at first declared victory and has said for weeks and maybe even months that he has won. The state governor, Steve Bullock conducted a full recount which netted 25 votes to Senator Tester, and then he certified the results. This was the closest race in the 2018 Elections.

In the Nevada Senate Race, Incumbent Nevada Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) was unseated by Representative Jacky Rosen (D-NV) by 0.5%, or just above 6,000 votes. The results in this race have been contested and Senator Heller never conceded to Rosen citing fraud. Republicans around the country have declared that they won this race, but it does not matter as Rosen did win the race and will be seated in January.

In the Pennsylvania Senate Race, Incumbent Senator Bob Casey Jr. (D-PA) beat out Representative Lou Barletta (R-PA) by 6%. Casey has held this seat since 2006 the last "Democratic wave" in a midterm year where he unseated then incumbent Senator Rick Santorum. This race was not as close as many expected and Casey did very well in Pennsylvania, where the 2016 Presidential Results were fairly close.

Governor:
In the Florida Governor Race, Attorney General Pam Bondi (R-FL) beat out Representative Gwen Graham (D-FL) by just under 0.8%, a result that was unexpectedly close. Bondi beat out Graham, the daughter of former Florida Senator Bob Graham, by 25,000 votes. This race was very close as expected and the Democratic candidate in this race, Graham over-performed Levine by 1%, or about 45,000 votes.

In the Maine Governor Race, Former Minority Leader of the Michigan Senate Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) beat out Attorney General of Michigan Bill Schuette (R-MI) by 4.1%. This race was not as close as many thought it would be. However, it did remain competitive and was fairly narrow.

In the Nevada Governor Race, Steve Sisolak (D-NV), the chair of the Clark County Commission beat out Adam Laxalt (R-NV), the Nevada Attorney General by 0.3%, or just above 3,000 votes. This race was similar to the Nevada Senate result as it was contested for weeks after the election and was under scrutiny. Sisolak will become the Governor of Nevada in a few weeks and will become the first Democrat to win Nevada's governorship in over 20 years since 1994.

In the New Hampshire Governor Race, Incumbent Governor Colin Van Ostern (D-NH) beat out State Representative Frank Edelblut, by 5.1%. This race was expected to be close and was not nearly as close as originally expected as Van Ostern won by a likely margin in the competitive state. Edelblut proved that he is a very weak candidate who did very bad in the Governor race in the state.

In the Wisconsin Governor Race, Incumbent Governor Scott Walker (R-WI) beat out the Wisconsin State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers (D-WI) by just over 2.0% Walker ran a tough campaign where Walker was very vulnerable and almost lost. Evers attacked Walker and was ahead in the polls until the very end, where Walker came back and took the lead once again in the polls.

11/30/18: Fmr Pres. George H. W. Bush Sr. Dead At Age 94

Wikimedia Commons

Former President George H. W. Bush is dead at age 94. Bush served as the 41st President of the United States from 1989 until 1993. Bush also served as Reagan's Vice President from 1981 to 1989, as well as the former CIA director, Representative from Texas, and the former UN Ambassador under Nixon. Bush was fairly popular when he was President due to the United States' performance in the Gulf War with Iraq and his leadership. However, Bush become unpopular due to his bipartisanship when he worked with the Democratic-controlled Senate and House when Bush was President. Bush raised taxes which went against a promise he made where he said that he would not do so.

Bush funeral was a uniting event where many important politicians including former President attended. President Sanders was not in attendance but his Vice President Amy Klobuchar did attend, as did Bernie's wife, Jane Sanders. Former President Obama, Bush Jr and Clinton also attended Bush Sr's funeral. George W. Bush Jr, the 43rd President and Bush's son gave a powerful eulogy which was uniting and actually praised American leadership and President Sanders. Jeb Bush, a former 2016 Presidential candidate and the former Governor of Florida also delivered a eulogy that was popular and powerful. Another eulogy came from former President Bill Clinton who ran against Bush and beat him in 1992. Clinton praised Bush and their friendship.

12/16/18: Arizona Rep. McSally Nominated To Replace Late Sen. McCain

Wikimedia Commons

Arizona Republican Governor Doug Ducey, who recently won re-election in November by a safe margin has nominated Arizona Representative Martha McSally (R-AZ) to replace Jon Kyl who was nominated to replace late Senator John McCain. McSally considered running for Senate in 2018, but decided against it when Sen. Jeff Flake announced that he would run once again. McSally has served as the Representative from Arizona's 2nd District since 2015 and has been very controversial, notably on health care and protections for patients with pre-existing conditions. McSally will serve until a Special Election takes place on November 3rd, 2020 on the same ballot as the Presidential and regularly scheduled election. McSally will be sworn in as the next Senator of Arizona, along will all of the newly elected Senators on January 3rd, 2019 when the 116th Congress is sworn in. McSally is already the frontrunner for the Republican nomination in Arizona's Special Senate Election in 2020. McSally has already announced that she will run in 2020 to fill the remainder of McCain's term.

1/15/19: Government Shutdown Begins, Deep Divide In America

Wikimedia Commons

A government shutdown has begun as there is not even discussion between the Sanders administration and Republicans in Congress. At first, Congressional Democrats and Republicans in Leadership Positions in both houses were negotiating but after a few weeks, the deadline came and all dialogue stopped. The Shutdown is over the deficit and government spending. Republicans in Congress, notably the House Freedom Caucus wants to dramatically lower the budget on key programs like Medicare and Medicaid. There was debate in the Senate, where Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) attacked President Sanders and his "socialist agenda." Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) attacked the President and has used the shutdown to the benefit of the Republican party. They have used this to turn public opinion against the President and his policies, which has only kind of worked as the President's approval rating has decreased. Many are questioning how long the shutdown will last and how this will effect essential workers and the United States' safety, as many key programs are not funded during government shutdowns.

2/9/19: Gridlock Continues, Negotiations Stalled

Wikimedia Commons

The government shutdown has reached its fourth week and the negotiations have stalled. Republicans led by newly elected Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) are requesting a huge cut for programs including Medicare and Medicaid which Republicans are calling "a much needed readjustment" , and a rise in military spending. President Sanders and Democratic Leaders in Congress, are refusing and will not give the Republicans anything. President Sanders has promised to veto any bill that will give more funds to the military budget. The President has called for more money and funds targeted towards veterans health care.

Negotiations are stalled for the foreseeable future and are unlikely to go anywhere soon. There are fears that this shutdown could last multiple weeks into spring. Essential and government workers are not getting paid and are suffering greatly. Many are still working without pay for the good of the nation, even if Congress is not its job. Veterans also are not getting funds that they deserve and millions of Americans are suffering throughout the nation, especially in poorer and minority communities.

3/10/19: Gridlock Ends, Deal Reaches To End Shutdown

Wikimedia Commons

Democrats, led by President Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have reached a deal with the Republicans regarding the government and funding for the military and key programs. The Republicans were led by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI). The deal states that they will raise the military budget by 20 billion dollars and will leave funds towards medicare and medicaid alone. There will be no change in those programs. Both sides have agreed to the deal which will end the shutdown. However, many politicians on the far-right including the House Freedom Caucus, which is very conservative will vote against the deal. A few very liberal Democrats including Representative Ocasio Cortez (D-NY) and Representative Omar (D-MN) have said that they will vote against the deal.

President Sanders (I-VT) spoke - In Favor
I support this deal and today, have signed it into law. We need to end this terrible shutdown which has been dangerous and terrible for our great nation. Millions of Working Class Americans have suffered as a result.

Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) spoke - Voted Yae
I'm in favor of this deal as it is a win for the Republican Party and gives us much needed funds for the military which is crucial. I will continue to work for the people and will push a conservative agenda in Congress.

Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) spoke - Voted Nay
This bill is terrible as it does not accomplish what we wanted it to. We did not lower spending to worthless and stupid programs like Medicare and Medicaid which are costly and accomplish nothing. This is a cowardly move by the Republican leadership and I urge my colleagues to oppose it.

3/15/19: President Sanders officially announces bid for 2nd Term

Wikimedia Commons

President Sanders as officially announced that he will run for re-election. It was expected that Sanders would run again and it is unclear Bernie's chances in 2020, against various Republican challengers, most of which have not announced yet. Many Republicans were waiting for Bernie to announce and it is expected that many will announce in the coming days and weeks. President Sanders remains slightly unpopular among the majority of Americans, though it is very slight due to the recent government shutdown where many independent voters blamed the President for his stubbornness.

In a speech in Burlington, Vermont, the President stated: "Today, I will be officially announcing my bid for a second term. It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as President of the United States, something that I thought would never happen. We have done a great job and my administration has worked tirelessly for you, the American people. I am excited for more and hope that the American people will elect me once again and give me another chance to serve the people.......Thank you everyone. We will win this election next November in 2020! God bless you!"
