...in the contiguous 48 states that voted for a candidate none of its neighbors supported.

In 2016, this was true of Minnesota and Illinois.

In 2012 and 2008, this was true of Florida.

In 2004, this was true of no states!

And in 2000 this was true of New Mexico and New Hampshire.

I don't know if this means anything.

Just means that next election Georgia will either go back Republican or border another Democratic state, probably North Carolina.

A Democrat has never defeated an incumbent president without Georgia

Technically this was true of Maine in 2000, and if North Carolina flips in the future, it'll be true of South Carolina.

What a weird product of historical circumstances, hahaha.

Florida is the most likely state to flip from 2020 to 2024 from R to D. If President Biden proves to not be a Castro/Chavez/Maduro type of socialist, then the Republican Party cannot use that against him or his successor.

Florida isn't coming back. Dems need to go all in on North Carolina and Texas.

The last state to vote for a candidate with no neighbors of the same color, that does not touch an international border, an ocean, or a Great Lake, was WV in 1988, and 1960 NV before that

And the cool thing is that this isn’t likely to change any time soon, with GA voting more and more to the left. It’s hard to see it not being part of a Dem’s winning coalition with an R incumbent. If the streak were to be broken it would have been in 2020.

No, Florida is gone.

Agreed. Georgia has already flipped half as many times (once) as Florida has since 2000. Focus on Georgia, Texas and North Carolina if you're gonna crack the solid south.  Florida. Every year the Republican stronghold of senior citizens replenishes itself even further. Maybe some other time

Eventually they are going to run out of old people with the means to move there.

I really wonder what the effect of the $15 minimum wage by 2026 will be.

I hope it weakens the current industries that hold the state captive and forces a reorganization around higher wage industries. Then again, who wants to build a server farm where there are hurricanes? Then again, who wants to build a server farm where there are earthquakes?

Seems like GA might become like the IL of the south; a blue state surrounded by a bunch of swing states.

When was the last time a Democrat won both Arizona and Georgia? Did that ever happen?

Probably 1948 if I recall correctly.

I'm surprised Truman won it. I figured Thurmond probably would have.

I guess the people saying this would be like 1948 were right after all!

Apparently, Truman was listed as the official Democratic candidate in Georgia unlike the other Deep South states where Truman either wasn’t on the ballot or listed as like a 3rd party candidate. Which is interesting.

Welcome to the "coastal elite," Georgia! Hopefully you can demonstrate some much needed sanity again on January 5th!

Harry Truman won Georgia by a decent margin actually. On the other hand, Georgia would have narrowly went Republican if Douglas MacArthur was the Republican nominee in 1948.

The only place I could see that happening any time soon is Colorado, and that would take a massive GOP wave.
