I really don't get how people can think an Iowa senate seat can realistically flip in a Biden midterm when IA is voting nearly 15 points to the right of the nation, and where Democrats just lost a senate race despite many fundementals working in their favor. I guess technically COULD flip, but it would take some very interesting circumstances

27 years without missing a vote? Not bad, not bad. Wish him well.

If Democrats choose to contest this seat over PA (which is not safe for the GOP) NC (which is tricky but unlikely to be impacted to much by national climate due to demographics and dems do win statewide here still) GA (which has favorable trends) and even WI (which democrats have a logic statewide path to victory)...

The same people who convinced me IA Sen was competitive in 2020 are the same people who support full on lock downs.  Should have known not to trust them.

Not saying a fluke wont happen here and there.

When even Wisconsin is more rationale than Iowa.

What is with this Iowa obsession.

Likely R. Too early to call it Safe, but it probably will be in the end, especially if Grassley runs.

Agreed. The only difference is that Grassley will get over 60% of the vote, like he always has after he was first elected, while his Republican successor would get "only" 53-57% of the vote.

Likely R assuming Grassley retires, Safe if he stays, Tilt if the Dem can adequately harness the power of the Windsor Heights Dairy Queen.

Not a fan of him, but I hope he makes a speedy recovery. That being said, no matter what happens to Grassley, Safe R. We couldn't even beat Ernst.

I'm surprised that Pat Grassley hasn't been mentioned more often on this thread. He is very likely going to run if Sen. Grassley retires, and he'll be the front-runner if he does run.

Honestly Safe R, even if Grassley retires. Iowa is quite a bit to the right of the nation, and it will be a Biden midterm. I doubt Dems will be able to get a serious candidate.

It's not that it's Biden midterm, D's will be contesting FL, GA, NC, PA and WI, but Kim Reynolds is very popular and as long as she remains at Gov, Ernst and Grassley are gonna get reelected. We still have D's in Congressial districts in IA

This should be fun, let’s get a thread going about the marquee Senate battle of 2022. Can Republicans stop Rob Sand or is strong incumbent Joni Ernst's motorcycle plabook just not replicable in a midterm?

In all seriousness, Likely/Safe R, but Kim Reynolds (if she’s even interested in a run) vs. Pat Grassley could make for an interesting primary if Chuck Grassley retires.

I’m on team Hinson here. Pat is not entitled to his grandpa’s seat.
Nepotism is rampant in rural America.

He is definitely ending up in his grandpa's seat.

Sorry about the delay in answering. Pat Grassley has been a state representative since the 2006 election, and he is currently the Speaker of the Iowa House. I assume that it is widely known he is Sen. Grassley's grandson.

Good old chunk it in Chuck Grassley back out of Quarantine and doing well:

https://kwwl.com/2020/11/30/sen-chuck-grassley-completes-quarantine-after-testing-positive-for-covid-19/

Grassley took a swipe at Pelosi for sort of holding up Relief Legislation.
