North Louisiana and South Louisiana aren't even a pair.

Maybe WV and Wyoming just because of coal dependence and sparse populations.

They don't even have a border that is more than a mile long. I'd say New Mexico is to Colorado and Arizona is to California.

----

North Carolina and Virginia too seems like a pair, they are shaped similarly where one is inverted.

They don't have a border at all, actually. They touch at one single point (Four Corners).

Nah. Even though AZ and CO don't have a 2-dimensional border, they still go together better than either does with NM (or UT). Although a case can be made for AZ and NV.

They don’t even share a time zone. That’s a weird one.

Anyway,
Connecticut and Rhode Island
Oklahoma and Texas
Arizona and New Mexico
New York and New Jersey
Delaware and Maryland
West Virginia and Kentucky

idk why outsiders always think CT and RI are similar or close

Maybe, the 538 thing said closest were NJ/MA/NY... I tend to think of CT as a mix of NY/MA +New England... But in reality, RI doesn't have many similarities to CT, and RI isn't very New Englandy in the first place

When the NFL was realigning to 4 divisions in each conference, I had this idea that season ticket holders could vote for the three teams that they wanted in their division. They could disregard current divisions, or maintain old rivalries. Houston fans might select Dallas, Pittsburgh, and New Orleans. Jets and Giants might want to be placed in the some division setting up the battle for New Jersey.

If there was a 90% match, those teams would be paired. So perhaps Chicago and Green Bay. Tampa Bay fans might try to keep the association with the Great Lakes, but fans of those cities might not reciprocate unless they liked to travel to December games in Tampa.

After initial pairings were made, there could be additional rounds. If fans wanted to be in a division with Chicago, they would also have to choose Green Bay. Cities that found they were being rejected (e.g. Tampa Bay) would have to discover new rivals.

If this system were applied to State pairs, it would be up to the voters of each state to find a match.
